I just googled to see what was being said about the concert and this is what I found. I just find it so "Mexico".

Yucatan Governor Ivonne Ortega Pacheco announced that Chichen Itza will be host to not one, but two, giant concerts.
This fall the pop soprano Sarah Brightman will perform in an extravaganza at the foot of the site’s giant pyramid, El Castillo. And next year Sir Elton John will be the featured performer in another concert.
The Chichen Itza concerts will “project us to the world and relaunch local, regional and national tourism,” said the governor in a speech which dealt with, in part, the devastation in the tourism industry that has resulted from the recent swine flu crisis.
Last fall Chichen Itza played host to Placido Domingo. That concert, while a popular success, continues to provoke controversy. It has become a political hot potato in the race for the mayoralty of Merida, the capitol of Yucatan, with one party claiming the other misappropriated funds from the concert.

I thought about extending my trip until after the concert but those prices are to expensive. They should throw in round trip air and hotel.

Paul McCartney is supposed to play there in 2011. That would be the show to go to.

the good thing about living in Tulum is that you dont need to pay to stay at Mayaland when the concert is over. I enjoy that the owners are having shows there, but many people say it is a misuse of an archeological treasure. I think it enhances the magic. I can still feel Placido Domingo when I walk the grounds, just imagine the impression Elton John will leave.
Elton, if you are a lurker here, good work on choosing this venue.

chamba....I must be missing something. What does Mayaland have to do with the concerts? I don't think the Barbachanos have anything to do with it. The concert is held at the ruins.

Here is an older article:

Sarah Brightman had not even taken the stage last Saturday when government officials in Yucatan announced that former Beatle Paul McCartney would perform at Chichen Itza in 2011, preceded by Elton John in spring of 2010.

Yucatan Governor Ivonne Ortega Pacheco announced the line up the day before soprano Sarah Brightman took the stage at Chichen Itza to perform many of her international favorites. The governor said that Elton John would be pounding his piano in front of the Pyramid of Kukulcan in late March or early April, and that McCartney would be there sometime in 2011 as part of his “farewell tour.”

surely INAH did not book this event, or do you know something that I don't? who are the Barbachanos?

Don Fernando Barbachano was a friend of mine. He passed away a couple of years ago. He owned Mayaland, Hacienda Uxmal, Casa Balam, Hotel Cozumel Caribe, along with others and his sister Carmen owns Hacienda Chichen. I don't see their family being involved in this.
