hi everyone,
looking for some Cabana Recommendations in Tulum. we'll be down there over the christmas holiday (dec 21 - dec 29). i have no idea what sort of rates to expect for 2 adults.
a friend recommended zahra, but they are booked.
looking for something on or near the beach, simple, private bathroom would be nice. on or near the beach.
looking to spend $60-$90 a night (USD), but could go slightly higher if it was really awesome, beachfront, etc... cheaper the better though.
thanks in advance!

Hey Dave! Welcome to TI!
I hate to break it to you, but you'll be hard pressed to find anything on the beach for that price range over the Christmas holiday. It's probably the most popular time of year there.
You'd be lucky, I think, to find something for less than $200/night.
I'm not even sure where to start making recommendations. You might just have to go down the list hotel by hotel to see who has availability.
If you're willing to pay closer to 200/nt you might try Posada Lamar or Nueva Vida de Romero. Nueva Vida is a larger property, with a wide range of rooms. You won't get beachfront but they may have some rooms a little further back for less. Tita Tulum is another to check.
There are a few "stick hut" types of places, but I'm not as familiar with those. Beachreader might have a few suggestions, she was just down there and saw a few new places. Uno Astrolodge might be one to check out that has some more simple/rustic options.
You might check out the tents at CeSiak, which is in the Sian Ka'an biosphere just a short drive from the Tulum hotel zone. No private baths I don't think, though.
I'll let other folks who know more about the range of accommodations chime in. I just sorta wanted to give you a head's up that the holiday season is the most expensive and most popular time to visit Tulum.... sorry. :(

There are a couple of new places in the pueblo that have gotten good reviews, though. I think one is called Posada 09 -- can't remember the other. You might consider staying in town and taking a cab to the beach during the days. It's a great way to save some dough.

thanks! we're totally fine with a "stick hut" shared bathroom type of setup. we'd rather go cheaper than upscale.
Having never been to the area, I'd hate to book something that looks great, only to find out we made a bad choice.
CeSiak looks interesting. May contact them... I think we may be stuck with whoever has availability right now.
By near the beach, I'm happy if I can walk to it in 5 minutes or so.

Beachreader's sleuthing uncovered a new stick hut place on the beach that's just opening - Coco Tulum. I checked their web site and it looks like they have availability for your dates ($100/night) but they only have shared bathrooms: http://cocotulum.com/index.html
I agree with Phyllis, it'll be difficult to find anything under $200/night on the beach but good luck and let us know how you make out!

What about the Simple Bungalow at Playa Selva (www.playaselva.com (http://www.playaselva.com)) if it isn't already booked?:
http://www.playaselva.com/preise_en.htm
(The prices are by the week, but I don't think a week's stay is required.)
That comes out to $60/night in high season!
It looks as if the Simple Bungalow has a "shared" bathroom which, in reality, would only be used by the people staying in it, although I could be wrong. There are only two other units, and they have their own bathroom.

The nice thing about Coco Tulum is that it's brand new - perfect timing for you! Probably not too many people know about it. So that might be just the ticket...

Los Arrecifes also has cheaper stick cabanas with shared bathrooms

I believe some of them have sand floors, but they're pretty cheap and on a nice stretch of beach!
Good luck with your search!!

All of the above are what I would recommend, especially Coco, since they're new and may not be booked yet. You can also check Puerta del Cielo, who I booked through Extreme Control Sports: http://www.extremecontrol.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=31&Itemid=191&lang=en
They have really cute cabanas with private baths for, I think, $125 over the holidays. Don't know if they have availability, but it's worth a shot.
Good luck, and please do come back and tell us what you've found.

Where is Coco Tulum located?
Just south of Posada Lamar - you can see them on the latest todotulum.com map: http://www.todotulum.com/downloads/tulum_map.pdf
I definately want to check them out in January for potential future (and much cheaper!) visits.
