Beachreader just posted pictures from her (very) recent trip over in the trip report forum. Still looks like gutted shells of buildings. Sure didn't look like anything would be ready for Christmas!!!!!

That's what I thought! How are they going to go from empty shells to fully functional in 3 weeks?!

Yes, I saw the pictures too. And I heard from the guy who usually help us book (Antonio), that it won't open this year. That's why I am curious to see how is that possible. I don't think Tulum is exactly the place where things are rushed quickly (still remember the T-shirt on one of the guys: "Won't work for anything" :-) ), yet the smell of money might have changed things. But even so, Jana is right.

I can't believe they'll be anywhere near done by Christmas, but who knows? Maybe it'll be a little Christmas miracle.

Actually, though, $195 for Christmas is pretty good, considering (not CT cheap, but better than $400).

EvZENy, would you mind writing back to them and asking what their high and low season rates and dates are? I'd love to know.

I'd also love to know if they're planning on playing techno music at their beach club, maybe everyone should write them now and say we hope not, that we love the peace and quiet of Tulum just the way it is. :)

It is hard for me to let go of our ideas regarding Cabanas Tulum. It was a property we always dreamed of buying when we won the lottery!:p:(:p:(:p We have always believed the property was under developed, even for Tulum.

It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks. Hopefully, I will be able to see some results when I am there in February. They have a beautiful area of the beach to work with.

Got the answer (below)
Actually, Cabaņas Tulum have one of the greatest access and view to the beach - stayed there last year:
Here is a view from the bed in the morning:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/18415657@N07/4152533903/in/set-72157611986086663/
After all, ALL the cabaņas are ocean view :-)
And the beach was very nice, big and empty. 90% of the time we were the only people on it, which is the reason we loved it there (plus the fact that I could sleep on my hammock both outside and inside the room :-)

But I guess this will be changed now, together with the price :-)
The other trouble with them was (like few other places), that we couldn't get directly in touch with them. So this December we won't stay with them, even if they manage to pull it on time.
................................................
Dear Mrs Evgeny,

Good morning from Tulum and I hope this mail finds you well.

Thank you for your kind reply and interest in Cabaņas Tulum. At the moment the rooms that are being refreshed ( new beds, linings, windows, improved bathrooms, mosquito nets, lamps, etc) are the ones close to Ana y Jose. After Easter, we will start with the real change. The Hotel is now looking improved both in the rooms, and in the common areas. The owners are the same but we have rented the place and changed the management; we have put new palm trees, many hammocks, new reception lobby, new parking lot, new beach club ( we will provide beach towels and sunbeds and umbrellas), and a new restaurant ( managed by El Bistro restaurant in Playa del Carmen).

Breakfast will be a full breakfast : tea/coffe, juice and 1 item from the menu, as eggs any style, or pancakes, or fruit plattter, or brad and jam). The restaurant will be open daily from 7 am to 11 pm, offers breakfast (included in your stay), lunch and dinner. We provide beach service on the hotel premises at our beach club ZIGGY BEACH.

Our beach club ZIGGY BEACH: open from 7 am to sunset. Offers sunbeds and umbrellas and lounge. Bar and restaurant service available. We provide beach service on the hotel premises at our beach club. Relax and have a drink at the Bar or grab a bite at the restaurant.

There will be 24 hour electricity, and hopefully soon also internet connection.

We will be opening December 15th ( we are working fast!!) and will be happy to send you pictures of the "refreshed" Cabaņas Tulum as soon as possible!

Please contact me anytime should you need additional information, and we please come and see us when in Tulum!

Kind regards and have a lovely day,

Anna

7 a.m. breakfast sounds really great ,hope they can keep that up. I kind of hate the name "Ziggy Beach Club", but I guess I can't have everything.

Still hope they get back to you with high and low-season dates and rates. I really am curious, because even with the upgraded rates, it's a fantastic location with large rooms.

I agree I have stayed there before and all the place needed was some TLC which it is finally getting just wish the price could have remained the same.

:) Good afternoon everyone! Thank you for the feedback! :)
I wanted to reassure everyone that Cabaņas Tulum will have the same relaxed atmosphere as before; slight changes / improvements in the rooms and common areas, and the addition of a beach club ( that will not have techno music!!!) and a yummy restaurant with easy laidback atmosphere and accessible prices, managed by El Bistro in Playa del Carmen ( for those of you who knows them already :))

Welcome to the forum Cabanas Tulum!! Are you keeping the name "Cabanas Tulum" and just naming the beach club Ziggy??

We do have a thread that you can post to if you have any special offers or information that you would like to impart to us.

http://tulum.info/showthread.php?t=4346

It was mentioned in an email that the cabanas closest to Ana y Joses would be opening first. Is this fact?? The orientation of these rooms are somewhat different than the ones across the front, right?? Or is that being changed?? We would love any information you can share with us! Is the restaurant still at the back of the property?? You are improving on the beach chairs. I read in the email that there would be chairs, (not spoons) and umbrellas? These are for the guests of the hotel too and not just the beach club?? Sorry, inundating you with questions. I stayed at CT my first trip to Tulum and was planning on staying there the next trip, except it wasn't available.:(

Thanks for any info!

Oh, and I almost forgot ~ how about a web site addy??

In keeping with the relaxed beach vibe that we all love about Tulum, the NEW & IMPROVED Cabanas Tulum & beach club will be a fabulous addition. Hope you're open by spring 2010!!!! :)

:) Thank you Minniemex!!! Yes for now the name will be Cabaņas Tulum, and the beach club Ziggy ( with El Bistro restaurant ).
The only cabaņas to be open now are 8 front row near Ana y Jose and 8 second row; not new cabaņas, but with a refreshed look!
The restaurant will be beachfront, near Los Lirios, and there will also be the beach club- hammocks all along the beach and in that area. The beach club and restaurant El Bistro will be open to everyone. The old restaurant will ( later) become the main lobby.
We will have the spoons as before :) plus sunbeds, and umbrellas.
Basically it will look as before ( lil bit better), but the service and common areas in general will be improved.
Opening is still scheduled for December 15th!:D

OK, I'd just like to say THANK YOU for nixing the techno music. I prefer no music at all on the beach, but techno really gives me the heebie-jeebies. Two places (so far) have impressed me with their music selections, and sound systems that allow the music to be played very softly and still be heard: Om and El Tabano.

Anyway, welcome to the board, and congratulations! You've stolen mine and Minniemex's secret lottery dream: to spruce up CT. Can't wait to see what you guys do with the place!

From previous stays at CT, I know that rooms #1-16 were the best, with the largest patios and best layout. Will they have separate pricing from the other rooms?

I'll second that thank you! Beach clubs are nice, but not when they turn the speakers up loud and play music like that. Ugh. I come to Tulum for the peace and tranquility, not for techno music! So THANK YOU for keeping with the spirit of Tulum that I love!

Thanks so much for the pictures (but boy, Photobucket has certainly gotten annoying with all those rollover ads popping up all over the place--not your fault, just a complaint about Photobucket).

This is exactly what I wanted to do to that place all along!

What about the larger rooms, the ones that were numbered 1-16 in the old Cabanas Tulum? The ones with full-frontal views and the larger patios?

Also, have you guys worked out your rates yet? I'd love to see the rates for high season and low season, and what the dates of high and low are going to be.

Thanks again!

Happy you like the rooms!! The other rooms (larger) are closed off for the moment. They have already had major tearing down done, so no noise and no people working on those in the next few months. We are not sure when they'll be ready, but I can tell you the renovated rooms will be very very beautiful. I'm not sure how much I can tell , will ask and filter information if we can ;).
The new website will also be up soon, maybe in a couple of days.

Oh no, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to blame you, it's Photobucket's addiction to rollover ads that I was complaining about.

But as you can see, now that they're online, you can copy and paste them right here in the thread if you wish (as Minnie and I just did).

Looking forward to hearing more about the property and rates and dates, thanks!

I'm with Minnie, though, we were both planning on winning the lottery and taking over CT armed with cans of paint and bolts of fabric. Such a great location and all it needed was a little love! Glad you guys are there giving it some.

We are going for a drink later today! We stopped in yesterday, looks great! On a side note Cabanas Tulum, can we leave some stuff at CT for you to give to the Peanut Pet Shelter in PDC. We thought we'd make it down to possibly adopt a dog but distemper has hit the shelter and they are closed for adoptions so the motivation to drive up there is gone. I would also leave some money. We met David and Saul yesterday, maybe one of them? That way we can go have a drink at CT instead! I hope you read this soon!!! Or I'm doing the drive.

We only managed to stop by for a couple of margaritas but they were pretty special. We had the house specialTortuga Margarita, yummm. You can only drink one though and when I get the photo's uploaded every one will understand why! :margarita: x one million! I've got photos and when I find my camera cord, arg, I'll post a review of CT (at least of the beach bar)!

Margo, did you manage to get there?

:wave:did yesterday! Me and 4 others, but the waiters hadn't heard about your special...:p

Everyone enjoyed their lunch and Margaritas,,,,The place looks great, didn't really poke around too much....what I saw was beautiful.

I had the Tuna and Cesar Salad, it was FABULOUS, a big chunk of Tuna seared in spicy spices, cooked just right, and the salad was good too, my friend had the ceveche, it was very good, and another friend had the shrimp, delicious. Kids had quesadillas, the guac was good as was the rice and the beans were super!

Kids loved the hammocks and entertained themselves for a good half hour while the adults had a relaxing time. And, how many times have we joked with waiters in the states asking if they have a bed in the back for a nap after a HUGE meal....in Mexico it's no joke!

Only problem was there were a lot of bees, I got stung on the hand and I'm swollen up to the wrist....looks like my hand is a blown up surgical glove!!!!

What is the cabana tulum website? Can't seem to find it anywhere and wanted to inquire about rooms?

Thanks

Seems $200 +/- $25 is the going rate for beachfront cabana's for this time of year.

I'm more surprised by the lack of response from many of the hotels regarding availability. Suppose people are just hanging on the beach, enjoying the weather and very busy - but we've emailed a number of places and probably only heard back from about 25% of htem.

Yes, that has been a traditional problem in Tulum. There are a number of factors that contribute, from spotty internet service to just being too busy, but slowness in response is a big thing. Have you been approaching hotels with availability calendars on their websites? Or mostly smaller places that don't have much online presence? The availability calendar (if accurate and maintained) is something I think every hotel should have, it would save their managers probably tens or twenties of e-mails every day from people just asking "do you have availability on x week?".

But there are other questions that do need answers, so I guess these folks are always having to deal with e-mails anyway. And in-person guests, and staff issues, and maintenance, etc. The life of an on-site manager is a busy one!

Oh, and what places are you trying? Just curious on that one.

I ate yesterday at the new restaurant attached to CT. It is called El Bistro and it was really great. I cannot wait to go back for breakfast. The whole little beach club that they have looks great. When I spoke to the manager he was telling me that more rooms are in the very near future. I think he said 26. it is amazing how long the beach front is. I cannot wait to go back and try more food. Pics coming soon. My camera ran out of batteries. It was really great though.

Are the menu & prices the same as El Bistro at La Tortuga? Same owner, right?
