Recently, I was invited (along with some other Playa-area media people like my friend, Sara, of Playa Maya News) to stay at Casa de Las Olas (http://www.casadelasolas.com/)for a couple of days. This beautiful beachfront, 5 unit villa is located far South on the beach road; the last driveway before reaching the Arches into Sian Ka'an.
The Cielo Group, (of Hotel Cielo (http://hotelcielo.com/) and Carboncitos restaurant fame in Playa del Carmen), who have co-owned Casa de Las Olas with other partners for the last several years, are getting ready to announce their new sole ownership of this stunning property.
I thought I would be here today delivering insider information (since the press release isn't going out until tomorrow), but as it turns out, I got scooped (http://www.examiner.com/x-13454-Portland-Travel-Examiner~y2009m11d9-Act-quickly-to-enjoy-Mexicos-Riviera-Maya-2for1-lodging-specials)!
For stays from now until December 17, both Casa del Las Olas and Hotel Cielo are offering 2x1 on all rooms, meaning you would get two nights for the price of one. Minimum stay is 2 nights, for a 3 night stay, the third night would be half price from the regular nightly rate.
I somehow managed to ONLY take photos of the beach when I stayed there (d'oh!), but they do have some great photos of the rooms on their website.
Many of you are Tulum-addicts, I know, so you can understand what I mean when I say 2 days de-stressing in Tulum was like a full week anywhere else. Living and working in Playa del Carmen is nothing to sneeze at, I love my life, but I was completely wowed by Casa de las Olas. I think I saw 5 people in the course of a day, and that was just tranquil folks meandering down the beach. Plus the shooting stars and moonlight at night just gobsmacked me. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing, incomparable.
Here are the few photos I took during my brief stay:

Heather,
Casa de las Olas is a great place to stay in Tulum. We stayed there one year ago today and had the whole property to ourselves. I wanna go back!!!!! You can read about it in my trip report below.
What unit did you stay in? the big downstairs unit would be something else. But what we really liked was the seclusion. Sad to see they have gone up on their rates.
Oh yeah, is Santana still there?

We stayed in what is now the Master for $90/night before it was Casa de las Olas. Of course this was before any remodeling and upgrades. But...the beach is the same and I LOVE the beach in this area!!!

I'd be curious to see your photos of it when you stayed there for 90 usd a night, just to see how different it looked before. When was it that you stayed there, Pepper? Were the rooms the same then, too? One big master suite and then 4 smaller?

Gorgeous, but even at 2/1, definitely pricey. I'm afraid to look at the high-season rates!

I guess I'm not very familiar with the rates in Tulum, as these didn't seem out of line to me with regard to the units/property. While not in my "poor beach girl" budget, they seemed to be going rate, especially for such a private property with real rooms (cement walls, kitchens, etc). I was investigating some Tulum spots about a year ago and was shocked to find stick/palapa cabanas renting for 170 usd per night and more.
I'm going to do some research on rates so I'm more "in the know."

At the 2/1 rate, they're actually well-priced, so I shouldn't have said that. But at full price? :dollarsign:
Luckily, there are still some beachfront places I can afford on my own, just not very many anymore! :(

The only picture I have is of the beds having to be pulled out onto the patio/balcony so we could sleep comfortably in Aug of 2005. There was a breeze, but it never reached the location of the beds - exactly placed as they are today.
Actually the structure/layout is the same - just all new tile. There's no pic of the kitchen area - so not sure what may have changed there. The furniture is an upgrade as are the finish-out details. The kitchen area didn't have hot water at the time - I'm sure that has all changed.
At the time we were there, the bottom floor was more of a storage room area. It seems the OF Studio and OF Junior Suite are where the storage room was. And there was one loft-like room upstairs (I never went up there since we didn't rent it, but I think it has a palapa roof).
But still awesome to be at the last property before Sian Kaan!!!

Hello Everyone! I guess this will be my "informal" introduction.
I'm Russell Granger, and I've been blessed to be the new managing partner at Casa De Las Olas. In the next few days I’ll write a formal introduction like I’m supposed to, but for now . . .
Henry works with us at Hotel Cielo up in Playa del Carmen and is a real super star. In my zeal to get the villa in order I’m afraid I didn’t do a great job setting him up for success in the email department. Last week I addressed this and realized the information I gave him was confusing, even to me. There have been discrepancies in emails and I apologize for that, that’s my fault.
The information Heather posted is accurate. In addition, our web developer has promised to add our 2010 rates online tonight. Knock wood it happens, web developers are busy people.
In Playa we have developed our reputation through service, value, and a commitment to the entire communities success. My name on Playa.info is the same as here, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to check out our community involvement and peruse my posts. When our organization makes a mistake I’m the guy who’ll step forward and take the heat. I don’t make excuses and do not hide behind my staff. I hope you’ll find this refreshing and support us in our venture.
I get CC’d on every email that CDLO receives, and am working closely with Henry to insure our correctness going forward and that he is adequately trained for his new responsibility. If you have any questions or comments for me personally, feel free to drop me a line at info@casadelasolas.com.
Thank you, I’m looking forward to a relationship with all of you that’s as beautiful as Tulum!

There were so many when we stayed there. I have a cutie pie pic of my naked son as a one year old sitting in the middle of turtle tracks from the night before.

Thank you so much for clearing this up and taking the time. I TOTALLY understand. Always a few bumps in the road when making changes within an organization.

While this looks like a very nice place there are far to many more reasonably priced options along the beach for me to consider staying here. Even if you made all your own meals it would still be quite a bit higher than many other places.

I'm working on a rate comparison spreadsheet between the Tulum hotels/villas, just for my own peace of mind so I can help point people in accurate directions when they're inquiring about the various properties. It will be interesting to see how the properties all stack up and I think it will also be a useful piece of information for tulum.info forum members.

That's fantastic, Heather!
Can you add categories for bathroom doors, screens on windows....those details that can make/break a vacation.
And ceiling fans or fans in general.

Something I could definitely work on for the future, but for now I will focus on the rates (which are easily obtainable online for the most part without my having to wait for confirmation back from the hotels). When I become more familiar with the various properties and have more contacts, I'll happily put something like that together.
Maybe I'll do a poll in the general forum to see what kind of information people would most like in such a document. Hmmmm...this is turning into quite a project!:D
