OK I thought I had found it - Nuevo Vida De Ramiro! But I'm afraid it might be too far from town. Any other suggestions? Can't wait. Thanks!

:wave:Just wondering what too far means........La Nueva Vida de Ramiro is 8 km from town..I know this because we are neighbors!.....kind of in the middle of what is sometimes referred to as South Beach. If you are in a car, it is about a 10 minute drive to town. Also there are lots of taxis in the area. But if you are walking, I think any of the beach hotels are too far, but that is just me!

well 8 km is far to drive after drinks and dinner :) how is the beach there? comparable to El Paraiso? we're taking our friends and it is their first time going anywhere. how exciting is that!

:wave:are you talking El Parayso over toward the ruins? They are about 6km from town, so not much dif in the drive time......! The road is pretty tore up over there right now.......
the beach here is amazing just as it is over on that side........the water is a bit bluer closer to the ruins....
...one advantage to this side is there are about 8 amazing restaurants you can walk to from La Nueva Vida de Ramiro....and then there is the Salsa Party at La Zebra!
Don't mean to get in a turf war with the north beach........I enjoy going up there, but glad I live on this end.
NO matter where you end up, you'll be in Mexico........a good place to be.

Take taxis if you're worried about driving after a night of dinner & drinks in the Pueblo. But trust me, you won't want to leave the beach! Sometimes I have to force myself to go into town!!!

Hear, hear! And if it's a beach vacation, you would probably want to stay at the beach. There is no significant time difference to town from wherever you're staying along the Tulum beach.

:wave:So, one thing we all laugh about is when someone comes on and says, where should we stay..........and no other info....jajaja
So, what is your budget, what are your requirements, any other info that you could give us to narrow it down a bit? Are you looking to stay two couples in one room, two rooms? Bar on site? how long? what time of year?.....Maybe interested in a house?....jajaja;)
Give us some more clues and you will find yourself with lots of good suggestions........and a great vacation.

I stayed at Casa de las Palmas in June and it would work PERFECTLY for 2 couples - there are two bedrooms upstairs each with their own bathroom and a connecting balcony overlooking the beach.

Alright, you want details, you might be sorry you asked! We want to stay on the beach in Tulum, a swimmable sandy beach would be perfect. Of course we want a bar! We want to walk to restaurants. There are 4 of us (2 couples) and it would be cheaper if we could stay in the same place. I know its high season but we are looking for affordable. If we have to get 2 rooms, it has to be cheap. Has to be clean! Double beds will not do for big people. We arrive Jan 14 for 3 nights. Then moving on to some place else for 4 nights. Probably in Akumal. I hope that covers it! Is that special little restaurant down south Tulum that everyone always raves about still there? Can't recall the name but you probably know what I am talking about!

These days there are a lot of restaurants that people rave about. You might be thinking of Posada Margherita, people have raved about them for a while although their service is a bit lackluster. Las Ranitas was also a popular place to eat and that's much further south. Not sure if they're still open or not.
I think you might have a real tough time finding something affordable in high season, and with beds that are bigger than doubles. There aren't too many king size beds around, and those that are are usually in pricier rooms. Of course, affordable means something different to different people! I'd suggest Captain Dale's at La Luna but I'm pretty certain that wouldn't qualify as affordable. They're also working on putting in a new building, so you might just contact them and see what their plans are.
Cabanas Tulum was always our budget recommendation for cheap lodging on a good beach, but apparently someone's gutting it and renovating it right now.

hi there, yup I know I'm asking for a lot! thanks for this tho I will check into Captain Dales. That is not the restaurant I was talking about. The one I am speaking of is supposedly a very small secret joint at someones villa maybe?

Cabana #2 at La Conchita might be your best bet - king bed downstairs, queen upstairs. One bathroom with a proper door.
But...the beach is kinda rocky and on a cove. No bar on site, but very close to Zahra where you can get bevs.
What about Marrakesch at La Luna? Does anybody know if it's two queens? I think it is.

Marrakesch has two beds but they are not true queens and no door on the bathroom only a curtain. A nice unit though.

:wave:Surprised br or Sue didn't pipe in, Cabañas Tulum is closed.:eek::eek:
NOt sure what{s going on in there, but MAJOR RENOVATION! They have gutted every building and have a big work force in there, and a cover over their sign. (Um Girls? Did someone win the lotery and forget to tell me?):p
And, you still haven't given us a budget to work with....are you talking $50 a night cheap or are you talking $200 a night cheap for 2 couples? Just asking? We like to know how much of your money we get to spend! We all pretend it is our own vacation and what would we do under these circumstances.......
And Hechizos is closed as well right now, and you just never know if they'll reopen....but we'll know before your trip....

Nueva vida isn't far from La Luna. Why not do that?
:beerchug: Personally, I'd do two separate units.
The Marrekech unit at La Luna is not private for 2 couples IMHO. And Captain Dale's while certainly bigger is laid out more for a family. The queens are in open lofts, etc. Plus the prices on both units are about the same as just paying for separate units.

Nueva Vida has two units with 2 bedrooms, Blanca Duna and Espíritu Maya. But yeah, two separate units would probably be nicer unless you're very close friends. :-)

Sounds like they are okay staying in the same room. But we still haven't heard from ildipoo to hear exactly what affordable means to them...especially in high season.

The Blanca Duna unit at Nueva Vida is huge. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, full doors that close each part of the unit off from the other, two sets of fans. Two beds in each bedroom, so if each individual bed isn't big enough for two to sleep in, each person can have their own bed.
The only drawback is the back bedroom is significantly darker/farther from the water than the front room, so you might consider rotating, or drawing straws or something. When we were there, a group of nice chairs had been brought together in the little yard for group hanging. It's in the third building back from the beach, but still a nice view from the front bedroom.
But yes, a budget is what we need to see.

Hello! I would like to say about $200 for a 2 bdrm or up to $300 for 2 cabanas beachfront. I don't know if thats unreasonable. We could stay in town for $130 in a 2 bdrm condo but its just not the same as staying on the beach!

You mentioned in your first post that you had a perfect room at Nueva, but the distance to town was a concern. If your concern is driving to home from the Pueblo after having a few drinks, you can always take a taxi there & back to eat.
If it fits your budget I would say go for it, as you will have a hard time finding something in that $200 budget. You also get the free continental breakfast there too, so that can offset your taxi rides into town, or you can just pick from a plethora of places right close on the beach to eat and not worry about going into town at all. As Margo said you are only 8 km's (just under 5 miles) from town, so getting someplace just 3 km's closer isn't going to change much.

Perhaps Robinson Crusoe and Christoper Columbus at La Luna would fit into the separate units budget but they are pretty popular and my be booked- if not you may want to jump on them.
I don't get the drinking thing as there is no safe distance to be driving if you have had to many and the minor changes in distance aren't going to make a big differnce in taxi costs..

Four of us stayed in the two bed cabana at LaZebra this past February. It is behind the dune, still on the sand, not across the road, two beds, 3/4 wall between sleeping area and bathroom. If I'm not mistaken it was $200/nite total price to split. It worked fine for us, we had similar needs/wants as you, including by the sounds of it, budget. Our travel mates have their trip report here with some inside pictures, check them out and if you have any other questions, or would like to see more pics, I am almost positive Grasshopper has more. Good luck with your search, I hope this link works!!

You know, if the other places we've mentioned won't work for one reason or another, Los Lirios has large rooms, a nice beach, air-conditioning and a huge deal going on. I don't know if this will last until the time you're traveling, but right now they're offering rooms for $82/night, a real deal.
Ditto for Zulum, offering rooms for I think $95 through December.
Yes, I know this doesn't help if you're looking in high season, but there are a lot of places down there to choose from.
Why don't you tell us all the places you've considered and rejected and why, and we'll try to give you new places to check out?

Where do you find these specials? I didn't see the special at Los Lirios on their site. I would like to check it out. I think I have it narrowed down but haven't had much time to go over all the research. Hopefully I can do that this weekend!

It may have been a summer-only special, but the signs we saw on the beach road were prominent two weeks ago, and we've heard about this special since last June. You could send them an e-mail, or perhaps they're just not running it all year.

I just checked Los Lirios' web site and that special is only for July & August so almost over with now. I wonder though if they won't continue some sort of promotion for cheaper rooms up to the high season??

I was almost ready to book 2 cabanas at Los Lirios @ $190 ea and then read some terrible reviews on tripadvisor. I think I am ready to spend as much as I need to for some luxury on the beach.

OK that's it. We are staying at Playa Mambo! Otherwise I will drive myself nuts for the next 5 months.
