With some communication with a friend and them making reservations they got this regarding someone that is leaving the area due to the down turn to the economy:

IM GOING TO LOOK FOR A OPORTUNITY THE TURISTIC INDUSTRY IS SLOW HERE OLMOS DAYING.

Believe the person was heading somewhere else in Mexico..but mentioned that people are not being laid off but given less and less days to work, so everyone gets at least a couple of weeks of work and then a couple off, (unpaid) to make things fair. Another friend tried to book a condo in AKumal end of Oct and was told the WHOLE Luna Azul complex was completely booked for the month. What do you think?

Every resort is different in the way they conduct the business, some may be trying to maintain cash flow because they must. Some income ( reduced rates ) is better than no income. Others may be flush with cash which enables them to close or reduce the staffing during this slow season. They will wait for bookings during high season rather than reduce rates which are hard to bring back up again. The unemployment is high. The mega resort, GBP, can give 2000 workers reduced days and still appear busy. 2000 people is alot of Moms and Dads looking to feed the family on 30-40% less income.
The deal at the Luna in Akumal may be that they have no bookings other than the dates your friend was looking for, maybe. I am pleased they are booked out, hard to understand though, especially October. Maybe saying they were booked out is easier than saying we have released all the staff and can't have you here. Dunno.
The real deal is that it is very hard right now. Not that it is easy at any time actually. It is worse for workers, as all employment is off and service work can be very competitive. Good places keep their core staff working during hard times. Management and employees work for the success of everyone.
Economics was never my best area, maybe that is why Dan and I put our lives and heart into the Sian Kaan not looking for riches only wealth of experience.
See you in April Chica.
Love,
Ron
