While Beachreader and I were on the perfect trip I strolled down the beach one morning and this is what I saw at Cabanas Tulum:

All of the beachfront units were gutted and the sign on the beach road is covered with an orange tarp. Seems Cabanas Tulum is no more. Let's hope the renovators keep the same prices.

God that is SO what I've always wanted to do with CT, but you're right, I hope the new owners don't jack up the prices to the stratosphere to make up for the costs of reno. Looking forward to seeing what they do with it, though!
Oh, and Sue knows this, but neither Margo nor Rene knew exactly what was going on here, whether new owners or old owners buying them out, guess we'll see when they're done!

It's a shame to lose (if that's the case) a beach front economy cabana, but I would stay there for a little more $$ if renovated...and they offered decent beach chairs. Sue & Fran - how was the beach in front of CT...in May lots of smelly sea grass,

The beach was covered in seaweed as it was in April as well. I don't think they have anymore seaweed than the neighboring places just that they don't rake it.

wow, that's crazy. not too surprising, really, when you consider all the development going on and all the money to be made. maybe i should withhold judgment until we know more, but i'm betting that's the end of our favorite budget accommodation...
Boy you must have been surprised to see that when you were walking the beach...

Wowzer!! Holy buckets!!! That is exactly what I wanted to do to when I won the lottery!!
It will be really really interesting to see what the future brings in regards to CT.
Sue, did you look at the back of the property?? Was the reception, restaurant area gutted too??

No the back of the property was still the same so you couldn't really tell anything had changed from the road unitl they covered the sign.

I am really hoping that they stay somewhat on the "cheaper" side though.

I am going to be down that way tomorrow. I will swing by and take a look to see what the development is - if any- As high season approaches everything seems to be changing really fast! And now more then ever with the devastated economy after the infodemic.
I am still getting emails from my website readers about the swine flu!!! ahhhh! And just yesterday my mother in law called me to make sure we were all okay because the news in SF is that we are all dying and lethargic, walking in the streets hardly alive. AHHAHHAHAHAH!! And that was even the Spanish news.

Off topic....BUT, yikes!, Mindy!!!! They can't be serious! My oldest son has a confirmed case of swine flu and I'm going in to get tested today just to be sure since I had a small fever and cough...and this Texas. I don't think there was any flu in the Yucatan at all!!!

sorry that did sort of spin off topic. I meant it only in regards to how much and how fast things are changing down here. There were some confirmed cases here. There is a great post on my friends blog Canuck in Cancun (http://www.cancuncanuck.com/2009/09/swine-flu-ah1n1-cancun-september-update.html). She is so good about getting the facts.
I wonder what I will find when I check out Cabanas Tulum?!?!! If it is different I will post pictures.
I hope that your son is okay.

With the new school year, schools around here are taking illnesses of all sorts very seriously. My niece had a sore throat and fever last week so my sister kept her home, and the school nurse called every day to check on her, make sure it was just a normal fever. Apparently half of the sixth grade was out with something else, and rumors of swine flu were running through the parental telephone tree, though it was just regular sickness.
If anyone says they're not going to Mexico for fear of a flu that is running rampant here in the US, they deserve to be flicked in the head.
OK, sorry for continuing the hijack, back to Cabanas Tulum. Mindy, it would be great to hear if you find out anything! I'm also curious if it's new ownership or if the old owners were just finally renovating the place? I can't wait to see what they're doing.

Unlike most of you I liked this place.
Yes, it totally destroys the spirit of Tulum as far as style is concerned.
But so do so many new concrete buildings we saw December.2008!
At least it was cheap, had nice beach area and great view from EVERY room.
Most of the nice places I would love to stay in, don't offer most of it, but true - offer an amazingly cool, but expensive and not looking at the waves cabanas.
So it's a balance.
And I guess I will have to figure out where to go in 3 months :-(

Who didn't like this place. I've stayed there. It was a great place for the budget traveller. Hopefully it will remain an affordable option.

Loved Cabanas Tulum!! I just choose to spend a few more bucks and stay elsewhere. CT has always been my fallback to an inexpensive stay in Tulum!!
If anyone out there has any clue to the plans for CT, please post!

:wave:I still havenīt heard who or what, (I do try to stay OUT of the rumor mill....) :p but I can tell you itīs changing! The front units are now all 2 story and the whole place is still a mess, they are a ways off from finishing....I did walk up there the other day and yes, the whole property including the restaurant is in flux.....I think I remember seeing a clauserado sign though, there has been no change in the last week....Iīll check next time Iī`m up that way......
The town is what is freaking me out....so much construction going on EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Mindy, you better stop by if youīre coming this way.....:beerchug:

Got reply from Antonio Palma Suarez (the omnipresent link for finding a roof over our heads in Tulum :-)
"yes cabaņas tulum is closed and I donīt know when they will re open, they are remodeling the rooms and building some new ones."
I am quite unhappy if they expand and agree with Margonimexico, that too much construction is scary...
What can we do - that't the sign of "progress" :-(
