We have set our dates! Super excited! We will be in Tulum from Aug 24 - Sept. 1. 8 full days and nights, and we got good flight times too, arriving Cancun at noon, and departing at 5:30 pm, through Mexicana.

Now we just have to decide on a room! Nueva Vida has offered Ola or Alma del Mar. Both look great! I'm wondering if anyone has any first hand experience or advice?

Also, I'm still toying with the idea of booking the first few nights, then roaming around to see what else is available.

I'm also trying to figure out the pros and cons of the north beach vs. the south beach. It seems that many regulars on this forum prefer the open vistas and quiet tempo of the south beach area. But it's also mentioned frequently that the water and/or wind seems calmer in the north section. Hmmm? When we were there in April 08, and granted, it was only for a couple of day trips, but the north beach area did not seem too busy, esp. when compared to PDC.

What if we were to spend the first half in the south/middle area (ie Nueva Vida) and the second half closer to the pueblo road? If so, what lodgings would people recommend? We might try to take advantage of Copal's last minute 60% internet discount (hard to pass that up). It also seems like Vita e Bella has a beautiful beach.

Lots of questions, I know... but I love to think about it!

As far as picking between Ola & Alma del Mar ~ they are both beachfront. I think AdM is just a little bit closer to the ocean than Ola. Just personal preference. Maybe just search and see what it says about each room and make your choice. I haven't stayed in either of those rooms yet, but I know they will be my next choice.

In regards to splitting your time between the south and north areas of the Tulum beaches, go ahead and check out the north. If it seems you would like it then go for it! I am one of those people who prefers the South beache so I a bit biased in my choice. Everyone has their own preferences and if you leave your choices open I think you will be fine!

I agree with you! The planning is so much fun!! I think that is why I always end up booking ~ I can't stand not knowing where I am going!

I looked at both in May, and I liked Alma del Mar better......Ola is more rustic.

I love the south beach for long beach walks, easy access to restaurants/beach clubs and it's less crowded. However, I prefer the calmer waters of the north beach. Stay south and spend a day at north beach....Paraiso beach club if it's open.

We stayed in La Ola in 2007 and really loved it. It was very rustic so yes, you should keep that in mind. It really couldn't have been more beachfront. We especially like the little front porch. We spent lots of time just hanging out on that porch..It also has a sleeping loft and we had our teenage son with us that trip which is why we chose La Ola. In the description on their website it says La Ola has a "slipping area on the roof" which refers to the loft. For some reason that funny little phrase always sticks in my head...:p

Thanks for the responses. It looks from the pictures like ola has a couch/sitting area inside, while alma does not? Is this correct? I am sure we would rather be sitting on the deck, or better, the sand, but it's nice to have a place to sit and/or put stuff inside.

I have stayed in Alma. I would say that it doesn't really have a sitting "area" although it has a lot of floor space, and it looks like more than Ola. The deck is large. Here are someone else's awesome pictures of Ola:

Here are mine of Alma (and #24):
