I think they run every 20 to 30 minutes, but stand to be corrected.
Cabs to beach road last time was 35MXP, further down toward arches can run up to 75MXP.
This was 18 months ago, so someone will have more current info for you.

are we talking ado bus or colectivo? just don't want to get stuck sleeping on a beach, i did it once in below zero weather in college for winter camping class. not fun. can't imagine what it would be like with heat and bugs.

That's ADO. I've never figured out a schedule for collectivos. I've seen them at random intervals, though I honestly have never used one.

I have used both in the last several weeks. We took the bus from Playa to Tulum twice in the past month. The ride stops at Xcaret, Xel Ha, the ruins and Tulum pueblo. They pull in to all these places and stop so it takes a while to do so.
For ADO the cost is 52 pesos each way.
The colectivo is now my ride of choice. Never used it before now but it's a good deal and I think faster than the bus as it doesn't go off the highway. Cost is 35 pesos.
From Playa south you can go to the colectivo stand on calle 2 between 15 and 20th avenues. The guys there will direct you to the right van. I haven't had to wait more than a few minutes for the van to fill. The van only stops along the highway unless someone wants to go to Chemuyil which they will then pull off into. The colectivo will let you off in Tulum - I just asked him to stop closest to where I thought I might want to look around first before heading to the beach.
The taxi to the beach is 50 pesos. El Paraiso is now open again but the music was way too loud this past week so I didn't stay there. Not a problem finding a way back to the pueblo by taxi. Just stand in the road and they will find you.
For the colectivo back to Playa ask the taxi driver to stop in town and stand by the road in the direction you want to travel. When you see a colectivo coming your way just put your hand out and they will stop. Piece of cake.
I also did several trips to the beach via the ruins. Again by colectivo just ask him to stop at the ruins. Walk straight east past all the shops until the stone wall is in front of you. Turn right on that road and walk down it until you see a sign for Zazil Kin. The next road to the right seems to be a public access road. El Paraiso is on this stretch of beach. Reverse the process to return. The colectivos are waiting to take you back to Playa at the entrance to the ruins. No flagging required.
Enjoy

I've found the price from Tulum to beach road destinations varies from 40 to 80 pesos, depending on how far south you want to go. The cab drivers have a chart they are supposed to use. Going back from the beach road to Tulum I have found the price to be more negociable. In fact any time a cab approaches you in the beach road area I have found it more negociable. Often I would ask if they can take me to point X for Y number of pesos and they would usually say "get in". If not another cab would be by in a matter of minutes. Irregardless whether it's 40 or 70 pesos it's still cheap :)
