What do you do with your stuff while your swimming in the Cenote? i.e. car keys, wallet, passport, shoes, etc?

I am planning on going to Gran Cenote and I am curious what the protocol is with this....

Passport- keep at the hotel. Lock a photocopy in your glovebox if you really want to have one with you. Wallet- limit what's inside and lock in the glovebox. Keep copies of the contents at the hotel. At Gran Cenote, I just leave my shoes & clothes & keys in my backpack or tote bag on the wooden deck there. Oh, and a pareo or towel. Have a blast!

or bring another couple with ya and take turns staying on the deck guarding the loot.

I agree with BP ~ do not bring the passports with. Leave those at the cabana. Fingers crossed :crossfingers: when saying this, no one has yet to have their passport stolen. Our general rule here is if you can't afford to lose it, don't bring it. What we use, or I should say, what my DH uses is one of these ~

You can get one at any dive shop just about anywhere. The only thing we ever leave is our towels & clothing. Just make sure yours is watertight. He also pays attention to his pockets in his swimsuits. He likes one that has a velcro closing on the pockets. This helps with the keys to both the car & cabana.

Also REI sells a wide variety of sizes in dry bags- they even have waterproof fanny packs.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago for my trips to the springs (Florida's cenote equivalent) and it's worked very well. Big enough for a license/credit card, some cash, and a car key. http://www.amazon.com/Kwik-Tek-Alligator-Wallet-4-Inch/dp/B000BJ7WHE

We bought one of these too a couple of years ago from some on-line scuba place - we like it a lot better than the "hard" (like the one pictured above) cases that we used to use - these are not a big and bulky.

don't leave ANYTHING of value in your car at Gran Cenote. We got ripped off there... according to a local it happens all the time. Take it with a grain of salt but I wouldn't trust all of the staff, I believe we were watched. Spent a couple extra minutes stashing stuff, when we came out, stuff was gone from bags, bags stashed where we had left them, car still locked.

that said, definitely go to Gran Cenote but leave valuables behind, we were in a pinch as we were between hotels.
