New Rumor

The Bahia Principe has been growing expontentailly since opening, beautiful grounds, buildings, service, entertainment, the full meal deal, an excellent resort.
Well financed, well connected it now is spilling over into the jungle with condos, golf, a stretch of beach in the Kaan and perhaps it's newest property, Akumal Bay.

Poorly managed, under funded for years and just keeps getting hammered with hurricanes, fires, the economy and then the flu, the shallow pockets have given in to the sweet offers from the Mega resort to the south.
Change always comes, be sure you are prepared to take advantage of the ground swell or run for cover.
No permits that I know of have been issued for any resorts in the Sian Kaan.
We are rustic and alive with natural beauty, always will be here with our close friends, who wait for you South of the Arches.

Hi, Hhowie! Are you saying the ABR is selling out to the BP? Wow! That makes me very sad, but hopefully the BP will try to maintain a bit of the low-key/low-rise charm that made the ABR such a favorite for so many years.

Also, the BP has a piece of beach in the Sian Ka'an? Do they just kind of truck people in for a bit of hand-held "natural experience"?

I hope the powers that be in charge of the biosphere continue to protect it from development, happy to hear that is still the case and will be so for the foreseeable future.

It was bound to happen someday....beautiful beach and development seem to be creeping further south. sigh Emotions run high regarding the ABR on LG...no thread on this rumor yet over there. There has been a lot of discussion, that after several hurricanes, a fire and then the swine flu, the ABR is in poor financial state. Maybe that's why Alma is leaving...she knows what's coming. Here are her plans quoted from LG. I wonder what kind of business is coming to Tulum???

I don't think he said that, Heenan, just that the BP owns a bit of beach down there. A lot of big resorts in the Caribbean own off-site bits of beach or islands where they bring guests for picnics and a "desert island" experience. I don't know for sure that's what this is about, but it would make sense to me.

Actually, Heenan, I misread your original post. I didn't see the "beach club" part of what you wrote, just the "all-inclusive" part. :o

Yeah, a beach club might be just what they're doing, but I'm guessing it's just for hotel guests, and will still have to conform to the Ka'an's low-power-usage regulations.

So I'm still hopeful, but sorry I mis-read your post!

But you left out the really big news.
Royal Resorts just bought us out, and are planning to tear down Cabana Sol and Cabana Luna and build High Rise Condos there.
They promised to leave the Treetop intact as part of the deal though.

Nice try big Dawg, all my shite is verifiable.
The BP beach property in the Kaan is probably not registered yet, it is Ejido as far as I can tell.
Fences have been up for a year plus some, watched BP staff build them.
Along with palapas and paths, and parking both sides of the road.
Speculation here is correct, for now it is tours arriving on buses to experience a beach, jejejejeje.
Presently marked as Propidad Privada, signs are up, read the laws, in time they will own it.
Regarding Akumal, let me confirm B4 I get too much speculation.

I figured as much, after seeing the new overpass leading into the pueblo.
They didn't build it to make it easier for tourists to get into the pueblo to buy flat chicken. Pretty soon they will relocate the citizens and start building in the pueblo. A real shame, but ABR has taken a beating and I think were planning on selling out anyway, otherwise they would have improved the property a few years ago, before the fire.
The Tulum airport is much welcomed by the mega resorts. Almost time to "kiss paradise goodbye". Boo-hoo.

They are talking about the overpass at Akumal they just finished building. Road goes right over 307 from Akumal beach to Akumal Pueblo.
