View Full Version : Honeymoon at XD... Questions and Comments?

Hi all.... This is my first post!

My fiance and I are going to Xamach (Treetop Cabana) for our honeymoon in a few weeks. I wanted to run our plans by you and see if anyone had any suggestions. I also had a few questions I was hoping I could get answered.

Here is our general itinerary:

Fly into Cancun on Monday (land at 10:30 AM!), pick up our mystery "SUV" and drive down to Xamach. On the way, we will likely stop to pick up some rum/tequila and for photo ops at the Sian Kian Gate, Boca Paila bridge, etc....

Plan to spend Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday just relaxing... We love swimming, snorkeling and reading.

On Wednesday, the plan is to do a half day excursion to see the biosphere, after we get back from that, more relaxing.

Thursday is the big day. We will hit the road early and try to get to Coba just when it opens, then we will stop at Grand Cenote on the way back from Coba, and then do the Tulum ruins afterthat. Ideally, that evening back at XD, we would have Carribean lobster for dinner.

Friday (sadly our last day) the plan is to just relax again and enjoy the beach.

Wake up early on Saturday, watch the sunrise, get one last snorkel in, grab a bite to eat, and then hit the road for our flight home.

So, first, I would just like to know if anyone has any comments on the itenerary. Sound good? Is there anything we are missing that we should definitely see/do while there? Any advice on how to maximize the enjoyment out of the activities I do have planned? As you can probably tell, we want a lot of relaxing time

I also have a few questions, mostly about XD...

What is the best way to voyage out into the biosphere? I have seen the Friends of Sian Kian and Cesiak websites, but there also seems to be some allusions to XD just being able to find you a local guide. It would obviously be cooler to have a private tour than be with a bunch of tourists bussed down from Cancun and Playa. I think we just want to see what it's like, see some exotic birds, and maybe a crocodile or manatee.

We aren't exactly serious anglers. I think going fishing sounds cool, but we won't be bringing any tackle, so while I think it would be fun to go fishing while there, we would need both equpment and assistance. Given our lack of skill, it is my understanding that if we do go fishing at all, we're probably better off in the ocean than in the lagoon. It's not a priority though, esp. if it will cost an arm and a leg.

We are both strong swimmers. I imagine it won't be a problem just to flipper out to the reef when we want to snorkel and then flipper back? Also, I stayed in South Akumal once and I recall the snorkeling in the bay being essentially as good as it was out by the reef. Is the case similar at XD?

What is the sea floor like at XD? Sandy? Rocky? Covered in Sea Grass? Sandy with big islands of coral scattered around?

Will there be an outlet I can use to charge my camera battery?

What condition is the road in these days?

Did the XD Guitar leave with Margo or is there still one there I could play?

What is the drinking water situation for us weak-stomached gringos? We try to be environmentally sensitive (i.e. avoid plastic bottles), but we also want to avoid montezuma's revenge during our honeymoon... Obviously, the ideal for us would be large containers of purified water from which we could refill something reusable...

Thanks in advance for your advice....

Welcome to the board and congrats on your upcoming wedding!

The guided kayak tour from CESiak might be a good way for you to get a feel for the biosphere. It is a really cool place, but you will definitely want a guide. It sounds like you could set one up for you just you and your fiancee...perhaps email them and explain the situation and see what they can do? I did the canal boat tour with them last year and it was great - a small group (split into 2 boats)...it really didn't feel like a big tour at all, so perhaps don't count that out...especially since you're going in low season!

I think your itinerary sounds good. The only problem you might have is on Thursday...Coba, Gran Cenote, AND Tulum ruins...that's a lot! You might be too hot and tired after Coba and the cenote. If you were willing to forego that night's dinner at XD, you could have dinner in Tulum and see the ruins at night - it's a very cool experience. Just my :twocents:! I'm sure you guys will have a great time though...it sounds like a wonderful honeymoon!

Hey, congrats on the Nups.
I am very glad you chose XD as a base for your adventures, I always do.
I will do my best to answer all your questions but be advised, I am biased or jaded, so listen to everyone, then decide.
First, the booze shopping, I do most if not all at the Covi in Tulum. 3-400 meters past the San Fransisco market on the east side of the road. Cold beer for the drive into Xamach Dos at the Stop n Go, across from the SanFran.
Second, Monday or Tuesday, if the wind is a strong onshore, drive south 10-20 minutes to the open beach for some very fun body surfing.
Third - check with the staff to see if Manuel, the neighbor can take thru the laguna.
Fourth - Thursdays plans are waaaaay too big for me. I would do Coba, leave XD at 630, ask Fransisca to have a quick snack ready for you. Hit the cenote of your choice of the way back, take your time today. Then eat at the Argentinian restaurant, "Beunos Aires", in town, do some people watching.
Fifth, have the lobster today, your last day, Friday.
The beach is sandy, the coral is a long swim, please don't go for it, ask Vanancio if he can take you out. Or use the kayaks there just for you. They are under the Treehouse.
Lotsa water for you, no biggie, will be 20 litres in your room.
Ayup, you can charge whatever batteries you want in your room too.
There is solar power 24/7, with outlets in all rooms.
Road is an ongoing project, it is always OK, sometimes 70-80 KPH is possible, sometimes 20 is too fast with all the ruts, or mini topes we call them.
You can fish from shore, it is very easy, again ask Venancio for the method, the sardinias and the rods.
If this helps, great if not, email me.
Ron,

You are going to love it there!

Okay maybe this will be a little biased too... but still

You will love it there if you want to do a lot of relaxing. The staff will take wonderful care of your every need for sure. The food, well what can I say - IT ROCKS! Fishing is good from shore but better out by the reef. So have Vanencio take you out on the boat, Dan had it all fixed this year and the "guys" love to go out. I am not a fisherlady, but had a blast! They have all the gear you need and will get you all the bait you can pitch!
As far as your travel plans, yes keep them in the forefront of your mind, but be willing to "go with the flow" when you get there. If you let it XD will get into your soul, body and mind and you wont want to do anything but take it all in. I think a good day trip down to Punta Allen be good or yes maybe the ruins but dont pack too much in...TRUST ME. You can always go back and be repeat customers (HEE HEE).
Hope you like critters, peas, and dogs! cause they are all there. Oh and happy hour starts at 4:30 behind cabana sol!
Cant wait to hear about your trip upon your return!

I think everyone has answered your questions, just wanted to say welcome to the board, congrats on your marriage, and you are going to have an awesome honeymoon at Xamach! That treetop cabana is really beautiful, you're going to feel like you're the Swiss Family Robinson up there. Well, OK, maybe something more romantic than a family... :p

Congrats.

There are also cenotes near Coba I believe that are supposed to be cool?

I agree with others...just go to the beach in Tulum....ruins can wait and you've already experienced Coba.

Enjoy.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and well wishes! Ben and I are beyond excited to experience Xamach Dos. (Oh yeah, and for the wedding too!) I've never been to the Yucatan before, and this board has been an incredible resource for our planning. Looking forward to relaxing and taking it all in!

Lesley :) (PhillyBen's fiance)

Hi, Lesley! Hmm, "Last Girl Swerving", does that mean you're really good in those chicken fights they used to have in car movies? :)

Or just that you can really hold your liquor? :p

Haha, I never imagined myself a James Dean. Too funny! The handle comes from a song, Last Man Swerving, that I like by the band Umphrey's McGee. Fitting, as I never want the party to end... :beerchug:

That works too! I wonder if we'll see you anywhere along the route, since we'll be in Tulum 8/3,4,5, we think. I think you'll be so happily cocooned at XD you may never leave. :)

A couple more questions for those in the know about XD:

1. Do you suggest using a snorkeling vest? We are both strong swimmers, and while I don't object to the vests in principle, they cost as much as a couple cases of cervesa.

2. What's the coffee situation? I unfortunately have an unhealthy need for large quantities of it in the morning. I'm guessing no "in-treehouse" coffeemaker, which is fine...just concerned about spending my honeymoon in caffeine withdrawal!

Thanks all!
Lesley

If you're strong swimmers, probably no need for the vest, but I'm not a strong swimmer myself. XD may have vests you can borrow if you get tired during the day.

As for the coffee, the owner of Xamach is from Seattle, perhaps enough said? They have good coffee and a french press to make it with, and if you need it really really early in the a.m., perhaps they might give you a lesson on how to work the stove and such so you can make it yourself. I shouldn't speak for them, but I've done it at other places.

I guess using a snorkeling vest is preference. I know XD does have the kayak you can go out in to snorkel, so you wouldn't be swimming all the way out and back. I personally use a snorkel vest when in areas I have not snorkeled before or if we are in a remote area by ourselves. I don't remember if there are any currents or concerns in their bay.
