OK...I'm chagrined but I thought I would overcome my humiliation and ask the experts...

My wife and I will be staying at Tierras del Sol, in Tulum, for a week. What's the story regarding water, ice cubes and fresh produce, fruit, etc? I remember being in PDCarmen about 10 years ago and that ice wasn't much of an issue although I seem -through a haze- to remember making sure we had bottled water. I don't really know what the "rules" are regarding an area like Tulum at this point in time.

Sheepish thanks,
Steven

Basic rule for fruit etc. is if you can't peel it, don't eat it.
Water along the hotel zone is usually bottled, didn't see anywhere it wasn't. They tell me the best way to know that ice is made with distilled water is that it will have an indentation or hole in the center..all the cubes I saw had this. All of the hotels along the Tulum beach offer bottled, so you should be fine.

I was less concerned about the water than I was the mosquitoes..but, neither was a problem when we were there last month.

You'll be fine, you'll have nothing to worry about. I'm not sure you'll be able to get ice at Tierras Del Sol; it's a fabulous place but the restaurant is more like being in someone's (outdoor!) home. You won't be able to just belly up and order fancy cocktails like at the spiffy places up the road. They have beer, if there's anyone around, which there frequently isn't.

We bought bagged ice at the store -- there are a couple of good stores at the junction of 307 and the Tulum beach road. Bottled water is available at several points along the Boca Paila, but the closest to Tierras Del Sol is a fair hike away -- maybe a kilometer? You're way down at the end of the road there. You will be wanting to stock up in town. And remember that if you want dinner you will have to tell Carlos in the morning so he can get supplies.

I don't think you'll have any problems with food-borne illness anywhere along the Boca Paila, though.
