I finally joined the forum after weeks of incessantly reading through trip reports and general posts. I feel so prepared thanks to everyone on here! This is such an amazing resource. Thanks to the forum, my boyfriend and I now know how to ask for only 200 pesos of gas and to insist on being taken to the police station if stopped.

We're booked at La Nueva Vida for our six days in Tulum. I'm so excited that it's almost impossible to be productive at work. I'm sure my clients won't mind!

Welcome to the board and enjoy your upcoming vacation in paradise! BTW, you're even better off asking for $150MXP instead of $200MXP. Less of a chance you'll get scammed! :)

I was gonna say the same thing, Lee.

Welcome, noodletaco! I love your name by the way, that's fantastic! Noodletaco!

Anyway, the typical swap is a 200 note for a 20 note. If you get 150 (cien cinquenta if I'm not mistaken), and pay with a 100 and a 50, the chances of getting scammed are significantly reduced. Or even get 100 at a time if you don't happen to have 150. But it's the 200 notes that getcha in trouble.

Isn't this forum great? I came over here from a different forum and it's wayyyyyyyyyy better. :D I've never left!

Welcome to the board!!! Which room do you have at La Nueva Vida? It's at the top of our list for next time. Have a really great vacation and I'll look forward to reading your report when you return. :)

I know EXACTLY how you feel -- I was beside myself for WEEKS before we went -- and I was NOT disappointed.

And my clients got over it. ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. It's only 150 pesos of gas from now on, I'll have to get someone to teach me how to say it convincingly!

Lynette: We're staying at Horizonte Perdido. After looking at the hotel map, it looked like that unit was closest to the water, which outweighed the fact that it's not a standing alone unit.

Helly: We're not leaving till Friday but I spent the weekend packing and cleaning my snorkel gear. Our guest room looks like a disaster zone which can only mean that we're going on vacation soon. Yay!

Hey Noodletaco,Welcome!
150 pesos is "ciento cincuenta" - (see-ento Seen-quenta)

If you want to be nice about it, it's "Cineto Cincuenta, por favor". Just say it fast or ask a Spanish-speaker to give you a hand in practicing. Make sure you hold up the money to them and say the denomination, and have eye contact.

(And before Lee beats me to it, make sure your gas gauge is working!)

Also, here are a few sites to familiarize yourself with the currency:

Have a great trip!

Hey Noodletaco - sounds like you'll be out there same time as me. Almost stayed at Nueva Vida but the rooms we wanted (Amor Eterno, La Ola or Magico Amanecer) were all booked. my first time in the tulum/riviera maya too! totally feel your pain about not being able to be productive at work - I am so there!

Hi Windycity! Thanks for advice. I've had an intern at work teach me how to say I only want 150 pesos of gas, so I'm feeling confident. When you say check our gas gauge, do you mean to see whether it moves or corresponds to how much gas we have? I feel like I'm totally over analyzing the situation, it's just that I hate getting ripped off!

Hammock Girl: We're going to be in Tulum from 6/28 - 7/3, if you're around at that time, come find us at Nueva Vida. I'll be the Indian girl worshiping the sun while my extremely sun sensitive boyfriend covers every exposed inch of skin with 50+ sunscreen.

No, I was joking because of my situation where we thought we got ripped, made a scene with the guys who actually do rip people off, but turned out that my gas gauge stuck! (Common to Fords).
