Hello all.

I am not new to the area, but new to this forum. My husband and our two sons have property to the North of Mahahual on the Costa Maya. Tulum is often our stop over on our southerly adventures.

Buena Vida, Akumal is always a stop as the boys love the Tree Houses and I love the wireless and then we are off to Tulum for the night and a partial beach day before the jungle drive on route to Mahahual.

I love Tulum because the beaches and the off the grid life is very much similiar to our beautiful Mahahual. Mahahual has alot fewer people on the beach as of now, although it is changing very quickly.

I have stayed at a few places in Tulum often return to Luna Maya to the right at the T in the road as their rates are fantastic. I would love to try other places in Tulum which is why I am on this site.

Thank you and nice to virtually meet you all.

You mentioned you "have property" near Mahahual...does that mean land or a residence? In any case, don't be a stranger!! :)

:hurricane:My Avatar is the beack of our property after Dean.

We were directly on the northern edge of the eye, the worst place to be in a hurricane. The dirty side I hear they call it, nothing like that here in Central British Columbia Canada, maybe an avalanche, but most of us do not build in avalanche areas...hmmm. Anyway, they figure we had a 25' to 30' swell engulf the area of San Jose and El Placer, some lots were totally washed away, all homes were severely damaged, actually I think if you have a home that was not ruined you were the exception. The town which the eye passed over was demolished.

The rebuild of most areas is coming along, the Coco's and Vegetation cannot be replaced as I believe it was 55 years since the last direct hit.

Prior to Dean Tulum is the closest thing to what it was. Our very own Corona Commercial, we lost all of our vegetation and our beautiful coco palms, it will come back but it was a tearful walk onto our lot after Dean. The drive to our lot was devastating looking at all of the things people lost and the hard work that was ongoing to get back to what was or at least have a roof over the bed.

We still enjoy every minute on our own personal paradise we just realize that when our Villa is being built we will try and take precautions and really be ontop of the structural points for strength. Hurricanes be dambed.

There was two positive for us, we are hoping to break ground for our Villa in October, our costs for clearing the land were nil. Our beach is huge now, the depth of the federal zone has probably tripled. I am not sure if positive is the correct wording, but we certainly were alot luckier than alot of other persons in our area.

I am looking forward to doing some lurking here on the Tulum Board, reading about the places and areas to visit. Unfortunately we will be doing small stops in the area for now as we will be rushing to get to Mahahual to see the developments on our own lot starting in October. We are hoping to be breaking ground, as soon as the Season :hurricane: is over.

Thank you for the warm greetings.

I think we all watched Dean closely!! I was supposed to stay at Mayan Beach Gardens right after Dean, but of course that was not possible. It is so sad to see so much devistation.

I agree Minniemex!

Last year we had originally planned to stay in Majahual for a few days and then there was Dean. We now have a place in Chemuyil that we're working on and will be visiting more often, so we'll definitely get to visit Mahahual in the near future.

Welcome Wilfam! Looking forward to hearing more about Majahual and the progress down there!

?Chemuyil Where is Chemuyil along the coast?

How exciting for you. I wish our place was already built, I have no patience for waiting. Glad to be waiting, but I would love to have a place to be, not renting all the time.

Would love to see photos:sun:

Have a great weekend.

Chemuyil is just 5 minutes south of Akumal. You'll see a sign that says Chemuyil CD which you can't miss as you have to slow down for the topes on the highway. This is the pueblo and there's a couple of great places to eat there that folks here have given kudos to. I've only eaten at La Palapa so far and it was really good. We'll be hitting Leo's Pizzeria and La Loncheria El Parque when we're there this time. If you are back on the highway just a short distance past the exit to the pueblo you'll take the first right turn and find a little subdivision full of little casitas. This place is really blossoming! That's where we are. There's an incredible beach called Xcacel just across the highway from the subdivision.

We were "looking" at Mahahual until the hurricane hit and unable to get there. In the meantime these great little casitas came available and were too much of a bargain to pass up.....so we jumped on it. I'll try and post pictures soon.

Where in BC are you? We're almost neighbors.....we live south of Seattle. Good luck on the progress of your house. I think it's really cool that you are able to do this in Mahahual. And remember good things come to those who wait!
