Hi folks! I'm hoping you can help me with something. My husband and I are interested in both hotels. We are heading down at the end of August, so we want something beachfront with ceiling fans. I know Nueva Vida has fans in their bungalos. Can anyone tell me if Tierra del Sol has ceiling fans? I can't get an answer from the hotel. Also, any advice on which bungalos are better in either place? We would prefer king/queen bed right on the beach. I've scanned/searched trip reports but can't seem to find the information I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance!!!

Did you visit the Nueva Vida de Ramiro website? I would personally prefer there. I take that back...I would really prefer Suenos Tulum but since you didn't give me that choice :)

I love that big ole' place right on the beach.

Thanks! We were considering Suenos but stayed there 2 years ago and wanted something different this time around. We looked at both websites and are leaning toward Nueva Vida, but a single bungalo rather than the one you posted. What I can't figure out from TDSs website is if they have ceiling fans or not.....anyone know?

I would love to hear someone tell me about the NV restaurant...Casa Banana. If I missed a review in someone's trip report please point me in the right direction.

We ate at Casa Banana twice 2 years ago when we were staying at Suenos and loved it (so much that we went back). It's very laid back and casual and the food was excellent. Service is slow, but it's Mexico, so you expect that. Definitely a thumbs up and a must do when we go back. :eat-drink:

Ok, I found a report by Jules and there is a picture in it of her cabana and I do not see a ceiling fan. There is one other member here who stays there all the time, but I can't for the life of me remember who. I would PM Jules and ask about fans ~ does it have to be a ceiling fan??

Here is the link to Jules report ~ http://tulum.info/showthread.php?t=2136

Thanks Minnie - I saw that too. I will PM her for sure - thank you for the suggestion!

We really like the food & ambiance at Casa Banana. It's not beach front, but has a wonderful tropical feel!! Breakfast was excellent as I remember.

Poasada de la Buzos, the beachfront at TDS on the right looking from the beach does not have ceiling fans. The cabana directly behind it does, however it is not beach front (almost though). I don't know if the second beachfront has a ceiling fan or not. Carlos is usually very good at returning emails, perhaps he's on vacation?

Thanks - that helps. Carlos has returned my emails but unfortunately has not answered my specific questions regarding bed type and ceiling fans. I appreciate your response!

I remember inquiring about ceiling fans with folks who had stayed there (also via PM). It seems hit or miss-- some do, some don't. I'll go back and look at my inbox and see if I can find more specific info.

Nope, no info on the fans in my PM's from Jana, but I think the info above is right- some have 'em and some don't. Sorry that isn't so helpful!

We stayed at Nueva Vida in May and loved it. Our cabana was Vista del Mar - a solo unit right on the beach. Big deck with a hammock set up about 6 feet above the beach.

We had a ceiling fan and there was plenty of breeze from the the sea (and a little spray whent he wind really whipped).

A big plus is that Casa Banana has good coffee!

Here is a picture of Vista del Mar (hopefully I did this correctly and the pic will show).

Now now, don't be hasty! Jana did a great trip report from there, and so did dcap I think it was... it looks great! It feels a little more isolated down there too, which I like.

But hey, they are both excellent spots -- it is definitely hard to choose between them!

Scheduled to stay at TDS in less than a month. Staying in the beachfront posada but not sure if they have a fan. From everything I've read I'm hoping not to need one. I have read everything I can from this site and others and it sounds like the breeze keeps you cool if you are beach front (this is the best site for info btw!!!!) Carlos has been fabulous about returning e-mails in a timely manner. Unfortunately that's all I can say because this will be my first trip to Tulum. Best of luck.

When we stayed at TDS there were no ceiling fans, however Carlos asked if we wanted a fan (it was june DUH) so he brought us a 16" fan on a stand and ran an extension cord from the generator to the room ah bliss. The gen. ran out of Gas around 2 or 3 Am but you were asleep by then and didnt even notice. Even charged Camera at night. If they have ceiling fan now all the better I guess but I still prefer the portables.

PhyllisB - which place feels more isolated? We are big fans of isolated. :) Thanks!

Tierras del Sol is further south on the beach so somewhat more remote. Nueva Vida is still south, just not as far ~ check out this map for the distance between them.

Not to mention...TDS is right next to Casa Magna which is currently closed. It probably has a big fence all the way around it, which isn't so pretty but you will have a lot of empty beach in front of it.

Good points guys - thanks. My biggest concern about NV was the fact that it is further north on the beach. The fences around Casa Magna may mean an empty beach, but does anyone know who is guarding the property? In the event revolution breaks out down there at CM (which would seem to be justifiable given the circumstances as I've heard them), maybe we are better off at NV....lol Sooo much to think about!

Even though NV is a little farther north, the beach area is still not crowded. All the vegetation and natural paths at NV, makes it feel very private! I agree with Doug...fences and guards around Casa Magna, and without maintenance, the property might feel & look unsightly. I would go with NV.

I think the area around Tierras del sol feels more isolated -- there are fewer places down that way. But that also means either driving to other restaurants more often, or walking a longer distance. Nueva Vida would be a great spot for walking to other restaurants pretty easily. Also I think the other hotels near TDS are smaller, so there would probably be fewer people around you.

Goodness it took me so long to write that and post it that everyone else chimed in already. I didn't realize it was right next to Casa Magna. That would probably sway me towards NV too. But I don't think it would be that unsightly yet, since the seizure of the property just happened--it took a while for the area around Suenos to deteriorate when it happened to them. When it happened to Suenos, the area around the hotel was always pretty quiet-- I would occasionally spot a security guard on the property, but I don't think you'd be in the middle of a revolution!

Thanks for your responses. We will have a car, but prefer to walk up and down the beach for dinner (and also LOVE Casa Banana). I think we will be far enough south at NV that the beach won't be too busy, especially in August. I think that's what we will stick with.

Thanks again!

I'm behind in my forum reading and am getting to this late! Our cabana was beachfront - La Terraza - and also did not have a fan. We certainly didn't need it in December but August will definately be hotter.

Casa Magna is near TDS but there is a decent sized "lot" between them - that lot was all jungle when we were but I'm not sure if that's changed. Our cabana was on that edge of TDS and we couldn't see Casa Magna unless we went in to the water. It's not visible at all from your deck or even most of the beach if I remember correctly.

Anyway, just wanted to add that in case anyone else was considering TDS. :)

Nueva Vida will definitely be closer to food and beverages at other places. It's not too far from La Zebra, Casa Violeta, Om and Ocho, all good places to eat (but on the pricey side given their beachfront locations).

I just returned from Tulum. I would go with NV. So many other restauratnst closer to that. Down by TDS is very isolated, if that's what you're looking for, go for it.

We stayed at Ocho and the most people that were out were probably 2 or 3 other couples on the beach at the same time. I walked past NV and that area and there were maybe 1 to 2 people laying out everytime I walked by. It was not crowded by any means. It still feels very isolated. I think you won't regret your choice.

Excellent - that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Thanks again to everyone for your responses!
