I've been reading this forum a TON and have a few questions about the wind. We are planning a December trip and are wondering how windy it really is. Is it uncomfortable? Will it blow the sand at you on the beach and make laying there painful? When is it the worst? The best?

Is seems most of you take your trips in May, so I'm hoping there's some good weather to be had in the winter as well. I'm a tax accountant, which means no trips for us January through March. And we live in Minneapolis, so we'd rather get out of dodge when it's freezing here.

First off, yes, sometimes the wind blows so hard you cannot sit out on the beach..... doesn't happen too many days in a row though. I don't know about December, but as we have said before, no way to predict the weather!! You should search the trip reports for one in December ~ most of us do travel the shoulder seasons, so might not be too many for December!!

Second, you should join us for our meet-up this next monday the 16th!! We can answer so many more questions in person!! Please join us!! Let me know on the meet up thread - http://tulum.info/showthread.php?t=2295

We experienced two out of 8 days that were very windy last Dec. That's the time we went inland. It never affected our trip. It is hit or miss.

Beachreader has been in December as well. I've been three times in early November, and only once was it uncomfortable at all and then we just went walking or relaxed on our patio instead. But there's really no predicting it.

If we could predict the weather...we would all be permanent residents in Tulum. lol!!!!

I have been in Jan, Feb, March, May and November..it's always windy..lol. That's good..you want the wind to keep things cool. Only a couple of times has it been any bit uncomfortable, a good reason to have a nice front porch/balcony with a hammock. When the wind dies down is when I worry...it can get hot without that breeze. Sandblasting in Tulum can leave you with spa soft skin..lol.

Several people have noticed that when it is windy to the south, it seems to be less so to the north, a good reason to go check out Parasio and Zazil Kin's beach.

If you can't find a spot that's not blowing sand, it's a good time for something inland..the breeze is hardly noticable once you get away from the beach.

It's all good..even in bad weather, it's never been a bad day in Tulum for me.

The times we've been in November have been breezy, but not the type of wind that sand blasts you. I love the breezy days...keeps it cool and the bugs away.

Sounds like November might be a great time to go. Maybe we'll go that month instead.

November and April/May are our favorite months!!!

I've been there several times, with the last being in the beginning of December. There were days of wind...days of rain...days of sun...days of calm. Too hard to predict what you'll run into but they do tend to run in cycles. One thing to consider is the amount of daylight (or lack of it) that you'll experience in December versus earlier or later months. One of the "negatives" about a December trip is you'll have limited light to explore.

Yeah, I'm with Lee, you don't want to base your trip decision based on random accounts of when it was windy. I do like early November weather (warm but not too hot during the day, cool nights -- cool enough for slacks and a sweatshirt even!). But I've seen a lot of the May pictures and love seeing all the flowers that are in bloom, and it's making me think May might be wonderful.

The main reason we started going in early November was because it was just at the end of hurricane season or a little after, and before the high prices of the holiday season. So it was initially an economic decision for us (in addition to just fitting into our schedules at home) more than anything else.

But on this board, I'd say April/May and Oct/Nov are the two top times that we tend to go. Lots of folks go at other times too though.

We wnt in mid-March had some windy(but not sand blasting windy) which was great for the boogie boarding and not so windy days, 15 minutes of rain on our last day on the way to the airport and always hot- which I like on my trips to Mexico. If you are really concerned check the historical data for least rainy month and then still go with a 50/50 chance.
