View Full Version : What is your favorite romantic restaurant?

I have been reading this forum for months planning our trip to Tulum and Akumal next week. Thank you all for your terrific input! On my last trip to Playa Del Carmen and Akumal 5 years ago, we had the kids with us.
This time it is only my husband and I celebrating our 25th anniversary. We are spending a couple of nights at TDS in Tulum.
If you could pick your favorite romantic restaurant in Tulum (besides Hechizo which is closed now), what would you choose? I am looking for a romantic atmosphere, fairly quiet, candle-lit, and on the beach. It does not have to be fine dining, but good food. Service can be slow, as we are used to that from other trips to Mexico. We kind of like their custom of having to ask for la quenta!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If it's romance you want....Dos Ceibas...hands down. We were here in mid-May. Check out a post with photos we did on this page of our trip report:

I concur wth Dos Ceibas, it was where we had our anniversary dinner this year.

When we saw this "candle wall" last year on a lunchtime trip, we knew that we would be coming back for dinner this year for our anniversary. It is very nice.

What an amazing trip report! I almost fell off my chair with the negrito truck and comment. What is Bimbo thinking? Anyway, really a great report. Hechizo..closed for the season? It will be back right? Please...I want to go there.

The Mayan Grill did it for me. We were there in March so it was dark early. We had the place to ourselves and the moon was full, illuminating the beach. I suppose it was the beautiful ambient conditions but the food was great and it was a very romantic dinner.:twocents:

Yep, Hechizo closes every year for a few months, but they'll be back open again I'm sure.
We had a tough time with Dos Ceibas on our November trip. Every time we stopped in, they told us they weren't open yet for dinner--they must have opened very late, because it was after 7 when we stopped in. But it does look like it would be worth a visit!
Mayan Grille (aka "Nachos") is also nice, but I tend to think the view is better in the daytime. I can see how a full moon would light up the area though -- that sounds wonderful!!!! A lot of folks also recommend Posada Margherita.
In the pueblo, Cetli looks pretty romantic too.

We had drinks only at Luna Maya ~ they have a separate area from the restaurant. I loved the ambiance there. You could not see the ocean but you could hear it and it was only candle light ~ I thought it was very romantic for drinks and a desert.

I have extremely limited knowledge of the restaurants on the beach road, but La Vita Bella was wonderful for us. Probably the best chocolate crepes either of us have ever eaten.

Between Mayan Grill and Dos Ceibas, I'd give it to MG if you could schedule a later dinner (after 7:30pm) when it would be quite possible to have the place to yourselves. Unlike at Dos Ceibas, the tables at MG are right at the water's edge. You can read about our experience there at this link of our multipart trip report: http://www.tulum.info/showthread.php?t=572

We popped in during the week and asked what time they opened for dinner. They being serving dinner at 7:30. Yes, a strange time - but I'm glad we asked.

Fabulous food, right on the beach and dining by candlelight with the sound of waves lapping the shore in the background....sounds really romantic to me!!

Oh good! I'm glad it worked out for you guys. We were there at 7:30 and they weren't ready for guests yet and told us it would be about another hour. You know how things are in Mexico, just gotta go with the flow! One night might be good to go at 7:30, another night not so much! That's why we love it though!
Unfortunately, the human stomach (my DH) couldn't handle waiting an hour and wanted to eat IMMEDIATELY! :D

WOW--great feedback! Thank you, experienced Tulum travelers, for giving me your input. The "candle wall" at Dos Ceibas looks so beautiful, but being at the water's edge at Mayan Grill is tempting too. We will check them out when we arrive. I can't wait!
I then may have to go to Luna Maya and/or La Vita Bella after dinner for drinks and dessert.

Gail...do a search for "Tulum Menus" and you'll find the food offerings/prices for Mayan Grill, Luna Maya, Posada Margherita, and several other romantic spots. It might help you decide (or further confuse) on that special spot.

So where exactly in Tulum is this? I've never heard of this restaurant or the beach before. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_6_2v.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxmk762YYUS)
