This is my first time to Tolum and I have a couple of questions. What is the best way to make reservations for any of those cabanas, la conchita/La luna/Tierras del sol? Is it better to rent a car or just pay the transportation fee.

I thank you for any info you may provide

Hola and welcome, Melecio!

I've only ever seen La Conchita reservations here:http://www.differentworld.com/mexico-hotels/cabanas-la-conchita/index.htm

For Tierras del Sol, go to their website and fill out their online request form: http://www.tierrasdelsol.com/

I'm not sure La Luna's reservations system-- might be on their website, might be thru Locogringo, I'm not sure. Other folks who've stayed there can chime in and help with that.

Remember, when booking directly with the hotel itself, they tend to operate on "Mexico Time" and may take a couple of days to get back to you.

Over on the FAQ part of the forum there is a thread with lots of informations on the hotels -- links galore.

Here's a link to La Luna's VRBO page: http://www.vrbo.com/128997 That's where we started when booking.

I come down on the side of not renting a car in the car vs. no car question. We did an airport transfer (arranged by La Luna) which was expensive but nice to have after a long flight. Once in Tulum, we walked A LOT and took cabs when the walk was too far -- the cabs were cheap and plentiful on the beach road and in town -- we even took a cab for several hours from Tulum ruins to Dos Ojos cenote to town and it was only about $30. On days we wanted our transportation freedom, we rented a car in town. So, I say: it's your vacation, don't drive with all the attendant stress of driving in a foreign country, if you don't have to!

Thanks Phylly/Helly, I have send emails to their websites and it is taking for ever to get a reply. I will be patient.

Yep, you gotta allow for at least a few days for a response on Mexico time! What time of year are you going?

I also have this email address for Carlos Esteban Sastre for Tierras del Sol -- it is estebansastre at hotmail dot com. (I wrote out the symbols because spelling them out keeps them from being picked up by spammers trolling for email addresses.)

Thanks, I got a response from La Luna and Tierra del Sol. I would like to be there in about 2 weeks ( June 23). I was reading the weather reports and it is cloudy and thunderstoms. Also the airlines are expensive. have you ever travel to Cozumel then to Playa then to Tolum?

I haven't, but other folks have. Gale in KY flew into Coz recently, then took a ferry to PDC and the bus to Tulum. It's definitely doable. A few other folks have as well.

Don't pay attention to the weather reports. It's the tropics in the summer. There will be a threat of storms every day. But if it rains, it is usually a quick passing shower towards the end of the afternoon. It's impossible to really "predict" weather down there, so just don't torment yourself by looking. It'll be fine.

Maybe La Conchita doesn't have availability. Usually you can see availability right on that Different World site.

I found it easy to fly into Coz and will do it again..it saved me $100 on airfare..that's more margaritas!:D And more food!:D

Even in high season, the airport was not at all crowded..I travel with carryon only, so I was thru immigration and customs and out the door in about 10 minutes. Just walk across the airport parking lot out to the street and grab a taxi..there were 3 or 4 waiting out there..they can't pick up on airport property, but they lined the street outside the airport property line.

Take the taxi to the ferry..$4.00 plus a tip.

Ferry runs every hour, except noon. Ticket $11...Normal sea conditions 30 mintues to Playa...rough seas, as the day I arrived..45 minutes.

Once you dock in Playa, it's easy..just walk off the ferry dock onto 5th, the bus station isi right there..lol. Ticket to Tulum $3.60US. It's an hour ride.

As much as I love having the freedom of a car, I love having the freedom of no car..especially if I am staying close to home on the beach for the entire visit. It's easy to get a taxi into town, or catch a ride if want..and collectivos make it easy to get around up/down the 307 corridor.

Phyllis is right..the weather reports mean nothing..ignore them. It might rain, it might not..but if it does, it's sure to be gone quickly, and it's usually welcome..a warm rain that refreshes evreything..feels great and it's a good excuse to duck inside the closest beach bar for a quick cervesa or margarita and a snack!

 Hi, I have stayed in Casa del Sol. It is only 3 blocks or 300 meters from the ADO bus terminal. You can take a shuttle from the airport to the bus terminal in Cancun. Then catch an ADO bus to Tulum. They have dormitory beds for $100 pesos a night. Carlos the owner speaks english. His sister who runs the hostel does not but I had no trouble getting my room and getting settled. Very friendly people. They do have hot showers and bicycles are available for rent. They have free rides to and from the beach. Everything is close and within walking distances or you can take a taxi. Alway ask how much in Mexico before you get in. I have walked away from plenty of taxi's and there is always one who will charge the correct price. Tipping for Taxi's is not expected unless they are hauling your luggage and put it in and take it out for you. They have a free kitchen but his mom will cook for you too if you want. You can call for reservations at 984-129-64 24 but since they are so new you can show up and get a room this summer. I was told they are going to put in internet soon so you can make reservations on line.
Hope this helps. I had a great time there. :beerchug:
