Ok, I am supposed to be from the hills and know all about "home remedys" but thsi one was new to me.

We are lunching at Tita, and I notice these clear plastic bags of water hanging from the roof of the restaurant. I ask, What are those for? I am thinking reflection of the sunshine or something. Nope.

They are fly deterrents.

Seems flys see in multiples..and so when they see water, it confuses them and they think it is a waterfall, or some other deadly thing that they can't fly thru or under.

Pretty kewl! I love this kind of stuff! I am going to give this a try here at home this summer...if it doesn't work, it's still a great conversation piece, especially after a few drinks..lmao! Didn't get a picture though, wish I had.

Yeah, I remember seeing those when we were there too Gale! I asked Esteban about them -- but I don't have good Spanish and he didn't have much English, so I never quite got it. I thought it was some kind of Mayan thing, which I thought was pretty cool. It sure didn't keep the mosquitos from biting at my ankles while eating on the patio at dusk one evening-- they brought out some incense-like thing and set it on the ground next to our table, and that did the trick!

They brought us those coil things, too. They must work well, be cause even Bob didn't get bites.

When I stayed at Copal, I took a couple of those Off Coils with me..they come with a clay burner..are they like those?

When I was a Vita e Bella, my ankles were getting it, so my waiter brought out a coil and set it under my table. I was surprised at first, but it worked great, since I really only needed it down there.

The mosquito coils I have seen down there are like these - I don't think they are like the "off" coils.

Yep, a clear ziploc baggie filled with water and hanging above an opening deters flies from flying under it. You'll see them hanging many places in the Ozarks. Specially above restaurant doors and drive up windows. I was surprised that only a couple people at our table knew what those were. Made me feel smart!;)
It does not deter mosquitos!
