:) Hello all. We are leaving in two weeks for our first trip to Tulum. We know nothing about the are and would welcome any advise you could offer. We have spent the last 5 years in Puerto Vallarta, so this is going to be a new adventure.

I would plan on spending alot of time doing beach/water activities. This is what I really didn't enjoy that much in PV. There's a big difference in the sand and water, esp. clarity.
You also will not be getting the nightlife PV offers. Tulum is much more laid back, as well.
I travelled to PV 3 times, after visiting Cancun. After that, I travelled south of Cancun. Now, I really don't care to return to PV.

Welcome to the board! If you are in Chicago next Sunday, we're having a get together and can fill you in on the good stuff!!

Welcome! Where are you staying in Tulum? That will help point us in the right direction in our tips. Besides, we're insatiably curious about stuff like that. :)

Welcome to Tulum Info!
There are so many varied activities in and around the Tulum area, it's really all about what you like to do..or not do..most of us have planned these very strict daily charts of things we will see and do, but once we get there, we end up with a severe case of "beachitits" and find that we don't do much but move from the hammock to the cooler..lol!

So, what peeks your interest?
Ruins..there are several within a short drive of Tulum.
Good food? Walk the beach and find the food!
Shopping and more good food? In the Pueblo you can enjoy both and some true Mexico atmosphere
Monkeys? The Monkey Reserve is pretty awesome
Caves? Actun Chen is close as is Hidden worlds
Snorkeling? Grab a cab, or drive a short distance to the north to Akumal and snorkel from the beach with the sea turtles and other Marine life.
Diving-The MesoAmerican Reef is at your front door..lots of dive shops in the area to arrange just the right dive for you..want to get certified to dive? Where better than in paradise!
Kiteboarding? There's a school on Tulum beach that will put you out there doing that!
Stargazing-You haven't seen stars till you see them over the Caribe in Tulum.
The jungle-Sian Kaan Bioreserve is the best of the best jungle experience.
Inland-Colonial cities and towns are just a short drive away.
Spas-There are many and the services they offer are all awesome!
Sunrise-This is part of the do nothing thing, you just get up early to do it. Nothing better than watching the sun rise out of the water.

The star of the show is the beach...and the great people you meet on the beach. You can do nothing and do it perfectly well in Tulum Or if you get bored and need some nightlife..head back to Playa for an evening..or down the beachroad to La Zebra on Sunday for some music and dancing. Mezzanine has a beach party on Friday's I believe.

We are staying at a small place called Nah Uxibal. Right on the beach.

Nah Uxibal is actually on Soliman Bay, north of Tulum. It's a residential area primarily. Nah Uxibal looks beautiful and you will find lots of Soliman Bay fans here. It's a great area to base yourself..right in the midst of Akumal to the north and Tulum to the south.

You will have a great time! Our first vacation in Mexico was in Puerto Vallarta and we loved it! After discovering Tulum..I can't imagine going anywhere else (except the Virgin Islands, but that's this summer's story!)

This last visit we stayed on Soliman Bay and day tripped Tulum...you can read our trip report here:
