View Full Version : Rodents in cabanas?

OK, I am going to sound paranoid, but I am truly, deathly afraid of rodents, particularly mice and rats. I don't even like those agoutis we see all over Xpu-ha. Spiders, lizards even snakes are fine. LOL
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this.
You don't have mention the name of the place, my intention is not to tarnish anyone's business. But I am wondering if I should reconsider the cabana thing. It was DH that it brought to my attention. I had not even given it one thought-until now.

Well, we tend to attract the things that bug us the most, so ... that being said ...
The only critter I saw anywhere near my cabana was an iguana. And I almost stepped on him because he was sunning himself on the doorstep.
It is one of the reasons why some places won't allow coolers/food in the cabanas.

I suppose no one can guarantee anything, but in my experience, 15 trips or more to the Roo, I have never seen a single rodent, nor any evidence of them (chewing marks, poop, anything like that).
I'm sure they exist, I've just never seen them. As Kimba said, don't keep any food in your cabana unless it's well sealed and preferably inside a cooler or something else solid (safest of course would be no food at all).
I'd also imagine that the closer to the beach you stay the less likely you are to see them. Most hotels keep their trash on the other side of the road, but the farther from those areas you are, the better.

Thanks for the responses and reassurance. I really felt stupid asking, but I needed to hear it. I did read a post on this site about a rat in a cooler, so I freaked out a bit. We do not plan on keeping food in the cabana.
I'm waiting to hear back from a few places for availablility, but we are leaning towards Ana y jose's for the a/c. I know, I know....

Well, we've seen cockroaches, scorpions, spiders, iguanas, and caged boas but NEVER a rat. I once thought I saw one of those beautiful, huge moths, got up close to snap a photo and it was a bat. :bat:

Same here, no raton en la cabana.
Perhaps it was because this guy was on the lookout:

He did a great job of keeping our cabana, pest free! :)

The only creature we ever found in our rooms were a couple of geckos that we saw and because of them we never had any skeeters in our room. Wish we could rent them for every place we stay.
8 days and we are on our way, jeez this is worse than waiting for christmas as a little kid. We have packed, repacked, heavily discussed (argued) over packing, wife is a minimalist and I am a "what if we need a ..." person. She is slowly winning me over with the phrase"if we need that we can buy it in Mexico". 15 days will be the longest we have ever been in Mexico.
