View Full Version : Taxi prices

Hola mi amigos. My wife and I have been frequent visitors to the Yucatan peninsula/Costa Maya/Tulum for about a decade now. We usually rent a car, but this will be our 2nd 2 week trip in 6 months and we are planning a "viaje economical" (i.e. buses, taxis, etc.). It's been a long, cold winter here in Colorado, so we need a beach fix!
We know how the collectivo option works. Since it's been awhile since we've used taxis, what's the average rate -- say from the pueblo down the Boca Paila to around Hemingways? I know it used to be 50 pesos to Tita Tulums/Tierras del Sol.
Gracias,
Tranquilo Tomas de Colorado

Going from the pueblo to Hemingways is still probably on the 50 peso range (Tita's is probably more these days), and if you flag a cab heading back into town, probably the same. But if you have a taxi called to come to the hotel and get you, they'll often charge you for both ways.

Hitching a ride is pretty possible; I pick people up all the time when I'm heading into town or coming back.

Thanks Beachreader. I'll be looking for you to hitch a ride. May 18-28. My wife is petite and gorgeous, long dark hair.
I'm 5'11, 180 and have a white gotee. Can't miss us.
Hasta pronto.
Since you're a beach reader. Have you read The Ruins? Scary and kind of silly! Makes me want to stay out of the selva. Just kidding, I love the Maya.
The movie will be released April 4th. Unlikely it will be as good as the book.

Thanks for the info, Rene, man things are getting pricey down there.

Yes, Tomas, I've read The Ruins, and your description of scary but kind of silly is perfect. Really scary, in a horrifying and gruesome way, but silly overall. Happily Smith is a good writer, and the dialogue and twists and turns really kept me going.

I don't think I want to see the movie, though, not if it means seeing some of the stuff he described. Yeeeech!

If you do a search on The Ruins, or maybe Scott Smith, you might find the thread we had going for a while on it. Almost everyone here seems to have read it! :) I think of it every summer when I'm in my backyard doing battle with the ivy and wild grape vines that try to take over my little piece of the world.

Thanks Rene! Very helpful info.
We used to know the former owner of Cabanas La Luna. I like the improvements you've made.

I still have contact with the former owner and he is still here in Tulum... I talk with him twice a week. He owns a piece of land on the other side of the road, not on the beach side.... He prefers the jungle view!

But I am glad that the info is helpfull.

Don't know what the prices are, but if you see a Jeep Wrangler flying down the road, flag us down. We'll give you a ride. It's a crappy walk from the pueblo to the beach, and you can meet some interesting people when you pick them up.

Thanks mgsipa. Will you be on the Tulum beaches May 18-28? If so, we'll look for your jeep and a hitch a ride into the pueblo some evening.
In the past when we've had a car, we often pick up people along the way.
Yes, we have met some fascinating people.
I enjoyed your trip report. Hasta en Mayo.

I love picking people up, have really had some nice conversations. Seems like the mile or two between mid-beach road and pueblo is the perfect length for a chat, long enough to talk but not so long you're stuck with them. Kind of like speed dating! :)

Hey Tom, I think I spoke too soon. I guess I didn't see your dates of travel before. We'll be there before you, from April 1 to 8. Sorry mate, I wish I could have given you that Jeep ride but we'll be a month off from your visit. Maybe next time though...cheers!:eat-drink:

I always get stuck with them myself... I just can't seem to have the heart to kick people out of the car when I get to my place and end up driving them all the way to theirs. Oh well, it's all fun and good anyway, and I can't really say I mind. My only worry I guess is getting stopped by the Federales along the way. I gave a ride to a German backpacker who obviously smoked a lot of weed and smelled of it, and I was sweating the whole time he was in my car since I don't know how the federales react to weed- never had that "lucky" encounter but I don't think it would be fun.

Are those prices for one-way or both? Wow, thats really pricey! Thats for us about 5 €uros... perhaps we should really rent a car or a scooter.

That's one way, Barblin, one of the many reasons I rent a car.

Thank you!
I'm already searching for a car... :) But that's again about 600,-€, that's 945,-$... for 17 days with all the insurance. Heavy.

La Luna
19th March 2008, 03:28 PM
$945 for 17 days is not bad at all.

$55usd per day is not to bad, normally they charge in high season 65 - 75usd...

What kind of car do you get for this money?

beachreader
19th March 2008, 03:35 PM
Actually, Rene, $55 per day is pretty high, so I'm guessing they're looking at a nicer/larger car. My Dodge Attitude or whatever it was was more on the $40/day line at Continental, and it had 4 doors, automatic transmission and a CD player (MAN, I need to remember to bring CDs next time, I keep forgetting!).

Am I getting the math wrong, or is the conversion rate between Euros and pesos not as good as between Euros and dollars? The Euro is so strong right now, perhaps you could consider paying for your rental in US$? When I paid them in US cash, I got a good rate (better than it would have ended up if I'd used my credit card).

Will you be flying through the US at all? Maybe you can buy some dollars there...

Just a thought. I'm not exactly up on high finance.

Was this during high season Nov - March? then it is a pretty good deal!

Yes, that was my rate from Continental-rentacar.com a couple of weeks ago. Not bad, for sure.

La Luna

65usd is a wrangeler jeep, so 55usd should be probably a middle class car, 40 - 45usd is a economy!

Barblin
20th March 2008, 03:32 PM
Well, now I've looked at continental-rentacar.com and there they have a VW Pointer for 700$ for the whole time. That's a great deal, isn't it? That's about 446€ at now. But I'm not already certain if we shall rent a car or not. Perhaps taking a cab and a scooter would be cheaper? I don't know. It's difficult to choose.

beachreader
20th March 2008, 05:31 PM
Yes, the VW Pointer is a decent little car. Mine was booked at that but the site gave me a free upgrade to the Dodge I ended up with. Rene, it wasn't a real "economy" car in the sense of a cheap little tin can (like the Geo or whatever they call them). Four doors, A/C and automatic transmission.

I wouldn't go with a Wrangler. Fun to drive, perhaps, but you can't lock anything in the trunk (no trunk, canvas top), and no A/C. The Jeep Liberty, now, which is hard-topped, would be a good choice if you can afford it. I think that was like $500/week contrasted to my $276/week.

Barblin, I strongly support renting a car, especially if you're going to be down there for so long. It gives you so much freedom to take day trips, even just to run to the store or a restaurant or a different part of the beach at a moment's notice. I hate calling taxis, I hate waiting for taxis, I don't particularly like riding in them and their cost is certainly going up.

So it might just be me. :)

Yes, I think you are right, beachreader. We want to do a lot, so I think it would be stupid not to rent a car. And from LaZebra to anywhere else it's really a bit far. We want to do Coba, Muyil, Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, Tulum-Ruins, Yal-Ku, Akumal for snorkeling, Valladolid and Cenote Dzitnup, Dos Ojos, Calavera and Gran Cenote, Cristal and Escondido, Aktun-Chen, Punta Laguna,... wow, as I see this, we won't have much time to hang out on the beach. *lol* I'll have to ask in another thread which of these parts would be possible to be combined in one day. And then of course we have to go into the Pueblo sometimes for cash... And finally, our round trip from the airport and back already costs 150$. I think if we take a taxi and the bus for all our trips, it will also become about 700$. So I think we will rent a car... :) Thank you so much for your help, beachreader!

Barblin...you may want to check out this thread as it talks of combining some of the spots you're talking about:
