I'll be somewhere on the "Yuc" from May 6 until May 14. Eight days and the only plans I have booked are Akumal from May 11-14. Akumal seems like a place where you need to reserve your room and LG made me book three nights.
If you had to nail me down right now I would say something like this:
1) Arrive on the Tuesday, the 6th - Isla Mujeres and at some point maybe the Isla Contoy tour. I want to check out that uninhabited island but we'll see if time permits.:island:
2) Thursday, the 8th head for Tulum and that evening/night hang in the pueblo checking out some lesser known eateries and drinking a few cold ones.:beerchug:
3) Friday night at Mezzanine. I want to see what the BIG party is all about.
4) Saturday maybe LZ or whatever is the happening place.
5) Tulum days are meant for vegging on the beach of course and maybe a Sian Ka'an tour.
6) Sunday the 11th head out to snorkel Akumal. I want to see totugas and maybe a spotted ray. :tropicalfish:
7) Wednesday the 14th head home.
But then I really haven't given it much thought.

By the way, welcome to the board miguel.

Thanks for the hospitality Doug. Yes, I was in Tulum and all over Mexico and Central America from about '65-'75 and it was quite an adventure. Not quite like John Lloyd Stevens experiences, but in retrospect, maybe more changes have occurred since I was there. Went to grad school at the University of the Americas in Cholula, Puebla. Looks like things have changed radically since then.

Hola, Miguel, and welcome!
Did you say "lighthouse"? Where was the lighthouse? I'd love to hear more about your travels in the sixties and seventies!
miguel
18th March 2008, 10:10 PM
Thanks Beachreader for the welcome. Wow, no lighthouse anymore? I can't remember exactly, but it was very near the ruins. If I ever have the time, I'll try and dredge up some memories of those times. Primarily, we had it pretty much to ourselves. For the most part, I hung out in Isla Mujeres, but hit all the great places. When I first visited Palenque, there was only an American couple there. We would go down in the tomb and do what hippie's did those days...

where are you staying in Maroma?
Thanks.

19th March 2008, 07:41 AM
Change will be an understatement compared to the 60's. I believe the lighthouse is the modern day ruin just south of the Tulum ruins. Close to where the beach road ends by being blocked before going into the ruins. There is a walkway/steps up to it from the northren most part of the beach.
Miguel, not only would it be great to hear your experiences from the past, but also the contrast you will see on this trip. Have you not been to the Yucatan since the 70's or is it just Tulum?

I'll add my welcome to you Miguel, but yikes I hate to say it... you're in for a real shock.... it will feel like a totally different place!!!
miguel
19th March 2008, 10:22 AM
Gracias folks! No, I have not been back to the Yucatan since the '70's and I am sure I am in for a shock. However, I have been researching it diligently to cushion the blow. I can't believe how expensive it is there now. I used to stay in the hammocks at Isla for $.80 a night. I have been hanging out in Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, etc. since then. I just hope the billfishing and the relaxation are still superb. Are there any places to eat lobster and/ or conch in Tulum? I will try and write of the contrast when I return. I will also try and locate some old photos and hopefully post them then. Trish, we will be staying at the El Dorado Maroma; really roughing it this trip for the esposa's birthday...

Nothing set in stone yet but planning on a 10 day trip sometime within the last week of May & first week of June, spending a couple days in the Akumal-Tulum area then 4 or 5 nights in Mahahaul-Xclak and maybe the last couple of nights on Isla Mujeres. Our last 5 or 6 trips we just get the airfare and reserve a car then wing it for hotels. This will be our first trip to Mahahaul and Xcalk so looking forward to exploring new territory.

beachwolverine
16th April 2008, 07:40 AM
Mezzanine or Zamas would be a good place to meet. My suggestion, Doug, is you pick a place and time, announce it here and ask who will attend. I think it gets kind of hard to get everyone to agree up front. We're going to be in Akumal and since I don't have specific plans yet, we can probably make anything - if not for dinner, certainly drinks after.
Thanks for making the effort and I look forward to meeting you and other peeps.
Ancient history, but I was at what I beleive was the first Playa.info peep meet about 5-6 years ago in PDC. Me (with my lovely wife Lee), Bumper, DavidB, James and Anna, and several others I've forgotten. It has now grown onto Peep Fest with a long long list of participants and "events" - although we have not been part of it since that first one.
Regards,
Scott (aka bw)

OK here goes...
Thursday the 8th, I'm going to Mayan Grill (otherwise known as Nachos) for a beautiful dinner just before sundown. I'm not sure what time sundown is but I can see myself getting there around 7:30.
Friday, the 9th I hope "semi old dude meets Tulum relaxation sickness" doesn't set in. If it does I'll experience an early bedtime. Otherwise, DJ Rick Cee from Manchester UK will be spinning on the "wheels of steel" at Mezzanine and we can dance the night away.

We are hoping the Mayan Grill is open. He closed for a few weeks in early May last year. Mayaflya asked them if they will be open this year at that time, and they said yes...but you never know. I hope he doesn't post his "Closed For Private Event" sign.
DougSR
16th April 2008, 11:55 AM
OK so Thursday the 8th, if Mayan Grill is closed for whatever, the backup plan is Zamas, 7:30pm.
Either place, we'll do a sunset tequila shot for all of the tulum.info people who cannot be there in person. For those of you at home, feel free to join along with us. :beerchug:

All,
I will be in Tulum the 7th to the 14th with my wife, and another married couple. We don't like to make any plans but we are planning to do the salsa thing on Sunday. It is Sundays right?
Does anyone have a list of "Nightly Fun", ya know what is going on each night of the week?
I heard there is a beach bar on the south end that does 2 for 1 happy hour. Does anyone know where it is and if the drinks are just watered down?
Correct me if I am wrong:
Friday ; Zamas Live Music
Saturday ; Mezzanine Dancing
Sunday ; La Zebra Salsa
any thing special on the rest of the week?

Zamas has live music most nights of the week in high season, several nights in low, you'll just have to see when you're there (unless they've started posting such things on their website, which would be smart but uncommon for the area).
Friday night is the big Mezzanine dance party.
Sunday night is the big salsa party at La Zebra.
I read somewhere else is starting a big Saturday night party, but I'm sorry I can't remember where it is. Ak'iin, maybe?
And there's the new restaurant by the Mezzanine/La Zebra owner called Pes that's in that bay between Zamas and Maya Tulum, but I don't know if they're open yet (as of early March they were on a construction hold for some permit or other, but maybe you all can check it out?). That would definitely be a likely place for a party night given the owner's credentials.

Cammie and I plan to spend 2 nites in Akumal and attend the Monday LG Cinco de Mayo gathering at the Lol-ha. All are invited! 4:30 for webcam pics and then happy hour!
Then probably back to Tulum for 2 nights. The last night, the 9th in Puerto Morelos. Lot of moving around but we wanted to do it this time. I have always stayed put in one spot and wanted this to be different.

I just read through this thread, and have some answers to some questions....Zamas and Luna Maya always have Thursday night music...Friday Mezzanine..Saturday Zamas and sometimes A'Kin, but it is DJ, not live..Sunday is the Salsa Party....Most music starts at 7:30 or 8 and most music stops at 10 or 11, depending on where on the beach they are...so don't be late.......Yes the new John Kendal place is open for lunch and dinner, but no parties yet.........It's beautuful, had shrimp tacos, they were great! Rumor has it he is going to try to make it a place for local Mexicans to dance and party, not sure how he's going to do that....I think that's about it!:beerchug:

I can't remember the name, but it's hard to miss...it is a huge new palapa that they built just south of Zamas before Maya Tulum. There are a couple of others being built near there too...not sure what they are going to be yet. Just for giggles, some of Johns employees are sporting "John Kendal para presidente T shirts"
