View Full Version : Substitute for Oscar y Lalos??

We are headed to Tulum in May, and I am looking for a place to stop for lunch, on the beach, somewhere between Cancun and Tulum. Last year, Oscar y Lalo's was perfection! It was quiet, with a classic view of the bay. Well, since they sold out and moved to the highway (great business decision!) we'd like a recommendation for something similar in the area. Any suggestions?
( Ideally, Mayan Grill, but we need something a little sooner off the 307)

All but a memory now.......sigh.....

Ahhhh, OyL...what a beautiful photo. I can't think of any place with quite the same ambiance. We did like Al Cielo on Xpu Ha. It's a beautiful view and great food!! I'm not sure if they always offer lunch, though.

Has anyone been to the new Oscar y Lalo's since they moved to their new, improved location next to the Interstate? Short of catering to the vanloads full of Altournative tour groups, I can't see it being all that attractive or popular. (Of course, I never got the impression Lalo was that into the business from a cashflow standpoint.)

I saw their signage, but didn't stop there John, the thrill is gone because they are not on the water.

I guess my suggestion would be Casa Cenote, if Gary has the place back up and running as it was pre-hurricanes. I love the setting, even if the food is not gourmet quality, I have always found it tasty and enjoyable.

There are several places in Puerto Morelos that would fit the bill too!

We are planning to take a bullet for the team and try them out on Saturday. Our flight arrives at 6:55pm and we will need to grab a bite on our way to Soliman Bay...I'm figuring that eating roadside on the 307 won't be so bad in the dark. That's the plan anyway....if only to mourn more deeply the loss...

We ate at OyL a couple of times last week. I didn't have the good fortune (or timing) to visit their beach location so can't compare the new place to the old. But we liked the new place just fine. The food was great and serving sizes huge. It was no where near as expensive as I thought it would be after reading some of the reviews. There are lots of huge tables, but the place was pretty empty both times.

First visit was Friday night after the long drive down from the airport. Second visit mid the following week for lunch. The place is set back far enough from the road that there wasn't really any traffic noise. And the landscaping eliminates the road view entirely.

That's good to hear! Do you remember how late they were open?

I think we got there about 8:30 or 9:00. They turned out the lights and followed us out when we left about an hour later. The service was great. A friend knocked over his full shot of Tequila, and before he could even shed a tear the waitress had another shot at the table for him...needless to say he took better care of that one. Plus, he wasn't charged for the extra one!

TWC - You might want to try Pelicanos in Puerto Morelos. Their grouper in garlic sauce will give The Mayan Grill a run for their money and a wonderful location right on the beach.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips! I just have to have that beach fix to start vaction off in the right mode, you know?

I contacted Al Cielo, and they are closed that day for a private wedding.

At least I still have three choices so far....thanks!

If a drippy sink can substitute for the beach my choice is La Floresta on 307 in Playa. That's my stop on the way to Tulum in May.
