This is a loaded question Rene..lol. Hard to vote, each time of year has it's benefits and drawbacks. The months I have visited...
Jan-Windy and too cool water but temps were perfect..not scorching hot, cool evenings good for sleeping.
Feb-See above, but more windy
May-Hot, wind has died down, but water temps were PERFECT and nights were comfortable.
October-See May, but add SCORCHING hot and VERY humid to the description. Evenings were cool and comfortable.

Actually, I'm going in May for several reasons this year. The kids are still in school, hurricane season doesn't start until June 1, it's not the rainy season, because Dan said to, and that's when the $9.99 seats from Austin started.
Good God, I need to get away now. While typing this response, I just heard a lady through two of her children off of an overpass in Dallas this morning. All survived but what is wrong with this world?:(

. . . because Dan said to . . .
Wow - Didn't know I had that kind of pull ;).
Also for May, low season rates on hotels before those pesky hurricanes set in. May is Hot Gale? Not when you come down from Texas. It's always hotter when I return to Austin than it is down in Tulum.

I'm moving to Texas if you get seats for $9.99 or at least drive there and catch a flight. How'd you do that?
which airline?
ON line?
Charter??
I am intrigued.
I can't find anything under $450 (low season, lord knows what I will pay for Xmas)
Thx, Gracie

Dan..May is HOT but not Humid..at least not the humidity that I experienced in October 2006. I like it hot, but can't handle the humidity..we have some oppressive humidity here in the Ohio River Valley in the summer months. I really liked May weather in Tulum the best compared to winter and fall... Low season prices are nice too! In May 2005, it was hot enough that it was a bit uncomfortable away from the beach, but close to the beach it was oh, so awesome and I didn't notice the skeeters and other bugs to be too bad either.
Doug..The world has lost it's perspective on right and wrong, good and evil. I believe that is what the Mayan's referred to when predicting a change in Dec. 2012. Tulum will give you a mental rest and restore your faith in our fellow man. If only we could send everyone there to repair and restore..but then it would be so crowded we wouldn't find what we love when we arrived ourselves!

Well, I voted Feb since that is when we usually go. Granted, it is partly due to winter here in the Rockies and it is not hurricane season there. I grew up in the deep south so I don't have a desire to spend a lot of time in hot, humid weather. (not to mention that went it warms up here, we don't want to leave) This was my 4th year in a row going in Feb. and it has been fine, although a bit windy this year & quite cool at night, but we didn't have a drop of rain. The drawback, of course, is the high season prices, but that's how it goes; I just try not to look at the low season prices.

I've only visited Tulum in April. The weather has always been good, nice breeze(sometimes to much), sunny days, short rain storms if any.:twocents:

Apparently, some of our contributors (including our moderators) live in cold weather, Dan. I'm not exactly sure why...maybe they like shoveling? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/28/28_4_5.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxmk762YYUS)

Hey Lee..I ask myself that all the time....why do I live here? Oppressively hot and humid in summer and well, cold and sucky in winter. After this past weekend's 16+ inches of snow..I am ready to find new digs in a better weather place...why do I live here? Good question!

What Doug said, plus the nights are comfortable along the beach road, as the wind hasn't died down yet, and there are no bugs!

I've been in January, March, April, May, and June. I've liked May and June the best. So this year, due to kid's school and my work, we're pushing it into July. I'm pretty sure it will be about exactly the same as it is here in DC in July -- hot and sticky.
Somehow, I think we'll survive.:)

Grace, there was a special which ran one Sunday in the newspaper...vivaerobus.com, Austin to Cancun, $9.99 each way + taxes + fees, came out to under $150 so I was immediately in it to win it. I live in Fort Worth so it's a 3 hour drive but no biggie. There have been some pretty brutal reviews of the service (I've jokingly stated I may have to sit with a live chicken on my lap) but I figure if I get there and get home the same day I planned I'm good.
Fees and all, I've actually never paid more than $310 leaving from DFW. But I've only gone in the off season. It's a joy living 20 minutes from the hub for American Airlines :airplane: ...non-stop everywhere and cheap rates.
Dan, I gave you mad props via my last post, so I'm sure your check is in the mail. :dollarsign:;)

While we had a great time, our trip in July was so ridiculously hot that I'd try to avoid going in July again if I could. If you were 100 yards from the beach, you were dying.
We're planning our next trip (wedding) for late April/Early May. Basically as soon as the prices drop! I'd prefer to do Hurricane Season as I visited in October before and found the weather to be great but I don't want to try to deal with planning a trip for a large group with the threat of hurricanes, it's just too much risk and I doubt everyone would invest in the insurance they'd need.

Congrats Armchair! Where are you getting married. I think you've probably picked a great time, and by the way, Oakland was a second home to me for years as my daughter (now deceased) went to school there- (USC) I really enjoyed all my time spent in No.Ca. and have fond memories.
We always leave town Xmas...no family; so we escape the hectic time and go somewhere quiet and recharge for the new year.
For 2008, we chose Tulum after seeing a picture of the beach emailed to me from a friend in Africa of all places!
It does sound like July is not the ultimate time to go. Although I have been all around the Caribbean and it can be delightful with a good breeze.
Good luck with your plans and keep us informed on your progress!
Gracie
Excited about exploring; after Tulum we are spending two nights in Punta Allen to fish.

I've only been to the region the same times of year: late Oct-mid December, and late February-early April, all based on work, so I can't really make a proper vote on the poll. For Tulum only, it's all been December and early March, both of which have proven to be extremely windy. Great for sleeping, not so great for swimming.
I just love it anytime!

Well...........I know y'all are gonna think my choice is out to lunch but when I go down for work or just for me I prefer the Oct-Dec times.
Cooler nights, I sleep like a baby. No people, town is just for the few hardy ones and locals. The wildlife seems more active too.
The best months for the guests I drag down, like family and such I like to take in Feb thru May, weather is more predictable for all the activities they try to squeeze into 5 days.

November and December are perfect for us in Mexico. I've been in March and was uncomfortable during the day. Kind of hard to be active during the day then, but the cold cervesa's are sure appreciated more! Not that they're not appreciated in November! AND..The tequila isn't as warm duriing the day in Nov. I'm not too crazee about hot tequila. Yes, it appears I plan my vacations around the temperature of the booze.
Sounds like a plan!!!

That's why I like October and November, which is when we always seem to go. Last year we were on the Pacific Coast (La Manzanilla) when Tropical Storm Henriette off the coast. It was pretty wild and flooded a couple of the nearby towns pretty badly. This year we're adding in a couple of trips with July and December/January. Normally wouldn't go in July, but we are chompin' at the bit to get down to our casita and get started! I'm am relieved our A/C will be installed. We'll go back in October for a short visit and then for 2 - 3 weeks on Christmas Day. It will be our first time being there during high season. Sounds like we may have to check out May sometime!

We just got back last week. I am not sure what the temps were but they were fine on the beach where we stayed most of the time. I think it is imperative to get a cabana on the beach. Once you get past the first set of trees- the wind dies. We did not mind the heat- we used the mosquito net and turned the fan on high when we slept. We were fine during the sleeping hours. For the most part- there was no one at the restaurants we went to. The only problem could be a lack of freshness with some of the dishes. Sometimes you need turnover to get rid of the old food. We will definitely go back again in early June- I teach therefore that is the only time I can go

I'm making my first trip to Tulum in the middle of Decemeber. What can I expect weather wise? Is it always windy? Or certain times of the day?
