Sorry - I'm new to this (posted a reply to Sticky's thread instead of starting a new one).

Though my Spanish is limited to "Donde esta el bano" and "No mas" I am humbled and honored to join this august group. Your passion for Tulum et al is eerily similar to the fanaticism many of us have for Windjammer Cruises (and that, my friends, is a very good thing).

I've traveled virtually the entire Caribbean (except the Caymans and my deeply beloved Jamaica), but this'll be my first trip (my girlfriend's second) to PDC and Tulum (April 19-27). Very excited.

We're staying four nights at Posada Lamar and three nights in PDC (got a convention to schlep to). Found the amazing restaurant guide y'all culled together (magnifique!) Also renting a car from Continental (never would have known about 'em without this site - stellar work). This is really an invaluable resource; so, to every one of you who contribute, thank you.

Have so many questions, starting with: arriving at CUN April 19 at around 5 pm, picking up the car and heading south. Where is a good place to stop and pick up provisions (ie water, etc.) Should we just try to handle in PDC or are there stores in Tulum open past 7 pm or so? Also, suggestions on dinner the first night in Tulum? In the pueblo or on the beach? (hint, Angela's already craving street tacos).

Gracias! :chimpanzee:

BTW - Just got the bad word that the convention we were supposed to attend in PDC has now been moved suddenly to Cancun (literally out of nowhere last night the much-ballyhooed Royal Playa del Carmen informed convention organizers the hotel was overbooked, basically telling about 300+ pre-paid conventioneers "We have no room for you. Now scram!" There's a planeload of lawyers and others winging their way down now to recoup tens of thousands in room deposits. Great drama!).

Having just looked at horrific reviews of the Royal on TripAdvisor, it would appear we're not missing much

So, four+ days of bliss in Tulum, then back to harsh reality in Cancun for three+ days. Yippee. :chimpanzee:

Welcome, amigo!

The San Francisco (the main grocery store in Tulum) is in fact open past 7pm. I don't quite remember how late, but we were there probably close to 9 one night. So you can always stop there. Otherwise, some people do stop in PDC.

I'd keep an eye out for Beachreader's trip report when she gets to it. She's a real foodie, so I'm sure she'll have a good rec for you! Mariposa also found some gems in the Pueblo on her last trip, so her trip report should be good too. Two great reports to look forward to, yaheee!

PhyllisB,

Great information regarding the SF Market. We will have to make a quick H2O stop before hitting the cabanas.

Cheers,
Kathy

No problemo Kathy. Do you have a Tulum map? If you're headed southbound on 307, it's on the right at the first intersection before Tulum Pueblo (the Coba Road). It's just before the light on the right hand side, just beyond the Pemex gas station (the one known for the infamous Pemex scam, where you give them a 200 and they try to tell ya you only gave them a 20).

Depending on the time of day, there are also little tiny places where you can pick up water on the beach road. But I'm sure they close earlier than the SF.

Tip #1 for first timers: Always pay for gas in increments of 100 or 150. No scams!

Not yet, but have ordered the Can Do Riviera Maya map that was supposed to be mailed yesterday. Can't wait to get down there!

Muchas Gracias, Phyllis. I found the SF Market on the Tulum map and, given its prime location adjacent to an ATM and near the Coba/Beach Road, I think we'll plan a provision stop there. Also, given the staggering wealth of superb recommendations in the Pueblo, we may just eat our way down Avenida Tulum until sunrise.
