October 13th - Saturday
Our first morning in Tulum. finally...... The sunrises continue to be bland. I am sorry, but they have not been as beautiful as they were last year. I just think the rain has something to do with that!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02967.jpg
We went for our morning walk, this day it was north to Maya Tulum..... As I have reported earlier, the beach in that area in really in shambles after Dean.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Board%20Pictures/DSC03097.jpg
There was no figuring out why what was damaged and why other things weren't......... for example, I would have thought this Cabana would have perished just looking at a huge surge, but managed to come out unscathed..... yet well built walls were washed away!?!?

Again, just foilage that was lost.
There is not much of a breeze and the bugs are out to eat me alive!! LOL My husband had his hand on my leg and my leg was covered, but a skeeter bit me through the material and left my husbands hand untouched. WTF!!???! Wasn't his hand more accessible??
We had our breakfast at Zulum which was included with our room price. I had granola & yogurt (they always say "goyurt") and my husband had eggs. They always served a zwiebach like toast and orange juice that was not fresh sqeezed, but pretty good. We always had coffee also. (brewed in a stock pot - no coffee maker)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Zulum/DSC02990.jpg
After breakfast we walked the beach for hours and returned to our room. Took an afternoon nap and woke up with it time to go to dinner. We showered and dressed in semi darkness and drove into Tulum. We seemed unable to remember the camera this day cause we forgot to take it to dinner also!! We ate at Charlies and would have loved pictures of our food!! I had Chicken Mole (I seem to be on a Mole and Sangria quest this trip!!) and my DH had Chicken Tacos. We also had the Chicken Lime soup which I really enjoyed. The Mole was great also, but my Dh said the tacos were just Ok.
We walked around town for awhile, looked in a few shops, then hit the beach road for home!! We had quite a nasty night as there was no breeze and it was worse if you had the net around you, so I suffered all night with getting bites galore!! If anyone asks me if I gave blood, I can say "si"!!

Yaayyy! More trip reports!
Sorry about the bugs, that really sux. I'm moving my bug spray over to my "bring" pile (not that I would have forgotten it, I just like moving stuff over when I think of it).

I thought I had more pictures and I did - somehow they didn't get uploaded. So here is alittle more on the 13th!!
Whatever this property was, wasn't anymore!!

You know, I found this picture in the 13th, and I didn't realize that Maya Tulum was this clear when we first got there. It seems pretty bad that it could have gotten so bad in so short a period of time. I wonder if it gets clear as fast as it gets weedy??

I took this picture on the 15th -

And then the really bad ones were the 19th

You can see how much calmer it was in this picture.......

seaweed is a natural part of the beach experience
James - I know that there is weed and it is natural, but they seem to catch more than their fare share right in that bay. For as bad as it got in front of Maya Tulum, I would NOT pay any money to stay there. It stinks and there was no way to even enter the water. Its just a heads up for the rest of the travelers...... if they want the experience at Maya Tulum for other reasons than the beach it will be fine.. but if they want a nice beach, Maya Tulum does not have it right now.

Minnie, I know what you mean about the seaweed/ turtle grass that piles up. In the keys it was the same and they call it "natural" and I know that it is. I just don't like wading thru slimy decomposing stuff to get in the water. And yes it does STINK as it decomposes!

Thank you for the update, minniemex!
We leave for Tulum this coming Friday and booked at Maya Tulum last summer after staying there 5 years ago and loving our beachfront cabana, the food, the massage, and the yoga (despite being it being expensive then and now, and very leisurely in service at the restaurant). Alas. I'm hopeful that the seaweed buildup problem has abated. It was a lovely beach when we enjoyed our White Christmas there before and centrally located to the beaches and restaurants north and south.
I'll post trip reports when we return!

I never gave much thought to Maya Tulum, except for the food..lol. I checked out the pictures on TA..don't pay much attention to the reviews, but I love to see travelers pictures..and if the seaweed problem is gone..it does look very nice. I hope this was just a strange occurence and it is now over with..maybe this is something that occurs only under certain sea conditions etc.? I hope so. I also see occasional reports about bedbugs..which I doubt is truthful, probably mosquitos..lol..and also one about biting cockroaches..good lord..that could happen anywhere if Mexico cockroaches bite! Your in the jungle, there will be bugs..lol. I will bring a big can of raid..for the biting cockroaches..heehee.

Minnie..you food pictures are killing me..I hope you saved some for me! I know Charlie's is very touristy, but I love their food and the ambiance..and those bottle walls..I swear someday, I am going to build one of those around my patio. Very pretty and what better use for a bunch of old wine bottles?:D

James, even you have to admit that the situation around Maya Tulum is unusual and extreme. That's the only reason Minnie posted about it, it's news! They had the same problem when I was there last March, though the previous March it was perfectly clear all week. Just seems to be a natural anomaly.
Maya Tulum is a lovely place, good food, nice rooms, great spa, fabulous location and a lovely beach...when it's clear.
Great pics, Minnie, thanks for your trip report!

Sunday October 14th
Again, not too exciting of a sunrise!! I am starting to get bummed!! I mean weather isn't the greatest, but don't cheat me on my
sunrises!! LOL
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02972.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02975.jpg
We ate breakfast at Zulum, which was part of our daily routine. First, pictures of the sunrise, second an hour or so walk on the beach and third, breakfast. Nothing about breakfast really ever changed, except one day I might have some eggs, others granola y yogur.
On our walk today we went past Shambala Petit and they were very creative with the washed up palm trees. I thought this was a great
way to take advantage of Deans damage. I also like the way SP looks. I might check into staying here some time!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02973.jpg
I remembered someone asking me it I could check on some dogs. Well, I couldn't remember which dog, so I took this picture.
There were about 5 of them all playing and following each other. The guy there might be feeding them, I wasn't sure.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02974.jpg
Bumped into my favorite (and Lee's) piece of wood. We were happy it was not lost to Dean. It was a little more covered up than usual.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02980.jpg
I have been having problems with my camera fogging. Don't know why as we did not have a/c or any other great changes in temperature. So, if some pictures seem a little foggy, this is why. I could fix them to some extent, but not to perfect.
We were on a quest today to check out La Zebra.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03043.jpg
BR wanted us to check out room #9
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03049.jpg
We decided that we would come back for dinner, as they said they were have the BBQ and the salsa lesson.
It is really one of our nicest days so far. I had to take this picture of the ocean, it just seemed so perfect!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02984.jpg
On our way back from our walk, we check out the wall building at Los Lirios. It seems that we sometimes make things too difficult when I see what they use here!!

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02988.jpg
We have to check out the building going on at Ana Y Joses.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC02993.jpg
I liked this picture, sorry kinda foggy - had a kind of ying and yang thing going on!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03020.jpg
We finished our walk and retired to our beach. I was so ready to just relax and read and rest and play in the surf.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Zulum/DSC01302.jpg
We had a great day on the beach. I have to say those beach beds with the pillows were very comfortable!! They were not hot and sweaty like I imagined!!
We took showers and got ready for La Zebra. Ok, now it starts to rain!! I guess it is ok, but I was really looking forward to the Salsa lesson!! We got to LaZebra and it was happy hour. Yeah............... this is the night we decide to drink Margheritas!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03063.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03062.jpg
We decided to go with the BBQ for $25.00 for 2 people. We are pretty sure this was not the regular full out BBQ, but it was great !!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03064.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03065.jpg
They started lighting the chandelier when we were eating!! It was very windy, so they had some problems, but it was beautiful and stayed lit for longer than I thought it would!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03067.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2014%202007/DSC03071.jpg
We sat around after we ate just people watching. I think it might be a place for foreign locals to hang out. We waited long enough that the rain stopped enough for the salsa lesson. It was a riot!! We danced for close to 45 minutes. Sorry, no pictures, as we were out dancing and had left the camera on the table. Really dumb, but it was there when we returned. That's what happens when the margarehtas are 2 for 1!! LOL After the lesson we stayed for another half an hour or so. There was a band that was setting up, but we had already had enough to drink and alot of exercise, so we decided to call it a night and head for home.
Zulum always had their place lit up with oil burners........ the ambiance was great!! It really looked like a great place to stay!! They also had torches lit every night on the property to get from the road to your building. I did not get a picture of these. sorry......

I agree Maya Tulum is a great place, but the seaweed problem is ongoing. It looked just like that May 2006 and May 2007. That little bay is like a net for seaweed. It doesn't seem to be near as bad on the south end of the hotel.
James, even you have to admit that the situation around Maya Tulum is unusual and extreme. That's the only reason Minnie posted about it, it's news! They had the same problem when I was there last March, though the previous March it was perfectly clear all week. Just seems to be a natural anomaly.

I'm witcha there. Maybe we can blow off the northbound thing and splurge on LaZebra on the Sunday night. Could be big fun if we're in the mood!
Minnie, what was the meat on your plate? Is that all pork? I saw the sign said lamb, but I couldn't identify the bones/meat. Looks great, though.
And they'll let you do the $25 thing for two people to share? That looks like plenty of food to me, and makes things much more reasonable if split.
PhyllisB
2nd December 2007, 12:31 PM
Minnie, was that a sunday night? We didn't even get a real menu when we were there -- a pretty set menu w/ 2 or 3 options for apps, main course, etc.
BR, I think you could easily split one of those huge meals. definitely don't get two... it's WAY too much food. And fixed price 300p per person BEFORE drinks added in.
We got there around 7 I think - maybe they had the full menu out earlier?
The place definitely filled up while we were there. We had a table definitely "on the outskirts" - just outside the main restaurant area - literally "out of the loop"! So it's worth it to get there earlier!

Like I said, I really didn't think it was the regular BBQ - I think they told us it was pork and lamb. I really didn't taste the lamb, although the bones looked like lamb. It was quite tasty and the presentation was very mexican with those dishes they use. I bought one of the lazy susans!! (not there, somewhere else!) And yes, it was Sunday night that we were there, but it was October, so maybe they don't do the full BBQ thing. We asked specifically for that when they handed us the menus and that is when they told us $25. for 2.
The salsa thing really works well if you have imbibed in the refreshments:D

October 15th - Monday
Woke up with the sunrise! Surprise!! A beautiful sunrise!! I took so many pictures that it is really hard for me to choose one. So I picked just a few too many:D
It started out blue & pink............
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01304.jpg
Then it turned a grey and yellow
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01311.jpg
Next it burst into yellow and orange
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01314.jpg
The rays started coming thru the clouds and you could actually see the rays!!

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01323.jpg
The waves were huge this morning too!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01326.jpg
During my spectacular sunrise, a rasta man passed by..........
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01327.jpg
He seemed to be doing exercises or he caught me taking his picture........... does seem to be looking right at me!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01328.jpg
One last sunrise picture......
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01333.jpg
Whoops, I actually thought it was over - but - how could I leave out this picture??
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01339.jpg
Or this one??
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01336.jpg
Ok, I really should be done but..............
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01345.jpg
And the sun finally breaks through!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01348.jpg
From the first to the last, the time elapsed was 35 minutes. What a way to spend half an hour!!!
After our sunrise every morning we take walk. This day looked to be one of our best so far. After we finished our walk we had our breakfast again at Zulum.
We decided that today we would walk as far south as we wanted with a picnic lunch. I guess we headed out and went about 1 1/2 hours south.
I love looking at the things the sea throws up on shore!! I thought this looked like a clarenet!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03091.jpg
I loved this bottle with barnacles on it!! When I picked it up you could actually see their little tongues sticking out.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03109.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03111.jpg
It was kinda funny, these are from Cabana Tulums walkway!! We saw lots of stuff still in the ocean that once was onshore!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03115.jpg
Here they were doing some work on CT's walkway........ don't know why they didn't reclaim the stones.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03119.jpg

Ok, here is where Phyllis stayed!! Hmmmmmmmmmm...... wonder where her report is??
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC03207.jpg
We returned to Zulum after a very pleasant and fun day at our own private beach down in the biosphere!! The only downer was I got hit by a huge wave and lost my prescription sunglasses. Really was not a smart thing for me to do, but I forget I have them on!!
We decided to go to Mayan Grill tonight!! We did not get there until after dark and felt we missed seeing what it really looked like. We had Pollo Parilla and DH had Beef La Parilla which I guess means on the grill. Our tab only came to 360P which included 3 cervasas....... they said no to Sangria. I just don't think he wanted to make it cause we got it there later. Oh, we also had chips and salsa for that price!! (I forgot until I looked at the pictures)

Yum, yum, yum!!!!!!!!! I guess we would be the connosseurs for the meat eaters of the world!! :)
There was a beautiful quarter moon in the sky - I really need a tripod for some of these pictures so I can use the night mode!! Was that you Windy who said you had a portable one??
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2015%202007/DSC01363.jpg
We made a trip into the San Francisco and then back to Zulum and to bed. One comment I would like to make and I guess Fitz bumped into it on Isla also---- you never know when you are going to have water or electricity. We have battery powered reading lamps and they really came in handy here!! One night we had no electric as they were having generator problems and on another occassion we had no water. I guess all I am saying is be prepared!! Still, all that being said, I could live here the rest of my life and be happy!!! LOL
Nighty night!!

It would be a blast to have stayed there and not worry about getting home that night. It sounds like a good plan to me too!! Maybe I can develope so sort of malady that keeps me away from work for a few days and sneak down to Tulum. I could take my phone and pretend I am home!! Yep, that sounds like a plan to me!! Now I just have to convince the DH why I get to go and he doesn't...... I mean someone has to make money for the trip!! LOL

Minnie,
Really nice pics. Glad your camera cleared up for your sunrises.
We never had water problems, but I do know that they truck in the water. We tried not to take to long of shower. I liked the torches and other things that lined the property. They have added things since we went do you have any pics of the grounds? Would love to see
Winter finally arrived so not around so much lately.
Love the avatar stuff also.

Very nice sunrise photos..the water looks rough! I like those dark, cloudy photos, too...makes for a really interesting shot. Your dinner looks wonderful at at MG. YUM
My tripod folds fairly compact, but still take up a lot of suitcase room. I'm taking a bean bag along next time to try and steady without a tripod...we'll see.
I'm really enjoying your report!!! :)

Minnie: GREAAATTT sunrise pics. Your description and Zulum photos makes me feel like I'm there! Their beach beds were amazingly good! We walked down south every morning and also took pics of sunrise and then ate b/f :) I'm liking your report so much!
And I also do prefer a split trip report than rolling down on one. Though doesnt matter as long as I get a new trip report to read :)

Bumped into my favorite (and Lee's) piece of wood. We were happy it was not lost to Dean. It was a little more covered up than usual.

Well finally some more days - Beachreader finished hers already, so I am shamed into doing mine!!
Had a really nice sunrise today and somewhat calmer seas -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC01379.jpg
We walked the beach like normal and stopped and looked at Los Arrecifes - they have a beautiful cabana right on the beach (BR has since been inside and said it was dark and dated) -
We caught this shot whilst walking down the beach -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC01404.jpg
I understand that this is a "tool" in the jungle, but!!!!!!!! it still freaked me out!! LOL
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC01407.jpg
I really loved this shot of the sunrise -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC01415.jpg
And the lack of color on this one!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03211.jpg
I had two different cameras down there - one I took with on the beach in a water proof housing (and had horrific problems with fogging for some reason) and another larger camera with a x12 zoom lens. This accounts for the differences in color and shots.
It seemed to us that Cabanas Tulum were taking this opportunity after damage from Dean to refresh the look of their cabanas. Only time will tell if this is the case, but these looked so much fresher than they did before. I did not go up and look inside to see if that was "refreshed" also.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03213.jpg
On our walk we came across this poor palm tree that fell victim to Dean......
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03216.jpg
After our morning walk we had our usual boring american breakfast and had plans to go to the monkey preserve. We got in the car and started out...... engine light comes on........ no speedometer either. This will not work........ so we called Continental and they said they would have a different car out to us in an hour. Ok, one hour Mexican time can be a lifetime............ hmmmmmmmmm, so we told Lalo at the desk we were waiting for our rental company and spent time on the beach and our balcony. After an hour DH went to wait for Continental to come, and low and behold, they were there in an hour and 15 minutes!! We were so flabbergasted!! What a bonus!! The car was an upgrade also, so double bonus!! Still too late to go to the monkey preserve today, so will delay the trip until tomorrow. We spent the rest of the day hanging out on the beach and taking long walks. We walked to the beach where I had lost my sunglasses the day before but of course had no luck - finding that needle in the haystack would have been easier!! LOL I guess I was hoping for a bit of luck. No such thing.
Well, after finishing our books (the Ruins for me) (which will account for my sick jokes and references tomorrow) we decided to go into town for dinner. We decided on the Buenos Aires Steak place. This was one of our best meals in Tulum! Remember, we are the carnivores LOL!!!
Our drinks -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03218.jpg
For your appetiser they brought this basket of bread balls, kinda tasted like a harder version of baking powder bisquits and served them with 3 tasty spreads.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03219.jpg
I had a beef and chicken kabob - the chicken ended up somewhat dry but the beef was delish!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03220.jpg
My DH had a rib eye steak -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03221.jpg
The bill came to $530, not too bad. I only had the one sangria and DH had 2 cervesas.
We walked around the town a bit, watched a "football" game next the the bank.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2016%202007/DSC03222.jpg
Both our sons played soccer and we were shocked at what they played on compared to the groomed fields we were accustomed to back home. After watching the game we decided to call it a night and headed back to Zulum.

Gorgeous pictures!!! And I keep meaning to go the Buenos Aires in town but haven't gotten there yet. I am also a big carnivore; how did you like the steak?
I can only hope that CT updating their cabanas isn't going to result in a major makeover of their rates, but that might be wishing in the wind these days.
And I know what you mean about posting comments on a review thread with this all-in-one format. Mine's like a million pages long, I don't know if I'll ever see everyone's comments (and answer any questions).

Wednesday October 17th
Well today was our delayed trip to Punta Laguna! We were excited to see monkeys today!! The sea was really upset today so it ended up being a good choice of days to go.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01438.jpg
Did you catch the piece of eye candy walking by?? I tried to get a better picture, but alas, no luck!! He was truly cute and buff!!
We took our usual walk, I think south this day. The sunrise changes so as it progresses!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01452.jpg
I had to stop and watch the bubbles come to the top after the surf passed over it!! (I know, I am so easy to entertain!!)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03235.jpg
Ok, breakfast and off to the monkey preserve!!
Here is information on how to find Punta Laguna! You take the Coba Highway to the roundabout at the Coba ruins.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03284.jpg
You then go North and we drove and drove and drove and finally came to the sign - we did clock it on the way back and it is 17kms from the Coba-Tulum Hwy. We were not sure if we had missed it or not as the road goes on forever and ever without any info!! (We did have the map, but you still are not sure)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03276.jpg
We were the only ones there the whole time!! We hired a guide, which turned into two - I should have taken the older guides picture, as he was a strange one. He was actually the one who went ahead and found the monkeys and we followed with a younger guide. I was in awe of the foliage in the jungle!! We finally got to the monkeys - here are a few of our best shots!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01476.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01474.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01472.jpg
I have to say that the skeeters did not bother me until we stopped to watch the monkeys, then it was full feast on!! I kept thinking I was going to come down with Dengue Fever, then I thought that may turn into a good weight loss program!! LOL!! They told us only the Howler monkeys were out eating in the morning and that the Spider monkeys did not come out until late afternoon, so our pictures are only of the Howler variety.
On our way out of the jungle, they showed us a zip line they had installed. They offered it to us for a small fee, but we passed as we were not ready to die. I had no trust of its construction!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01481.jpg
He pointed out a moth/butterfly - can't for sure remember which, but it looked just like an owls eye!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03256.jpg
This was a wild orchid - alas, no flower -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03246.jpg
Here is a picture of walking down a trecherous pathway -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03259.jpg
This was a fern I thought rather ominous - wouldn't want to brush that against my leg!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03266.jpg
Our guide then took us to the Laguna - I was really surprised how much it looked like a lake in Minnesota!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC01483.jpg
All in all we were really happy with our tour! I would never attempt this without a guide however, especially when you are the only ones there! If it had been busy and someone right in front had hired a guide, I would maybe tag along, but you could not do what we did on your own!!
For those fans of the book "The Ruins", I found the road and the flowers. I must say it really spooked me!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03282.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03263.jpg
On our way back from the monkeys, we stopped at a few roadside stands. We found the same place that Preya found - it was really wonderful and filled with Talvera pottery!! I bought a lazy susan that I absolutely love!! Every time I use it, it reminds me of Mexico!! This shop is located on the North side of the Coba Hwy just outside of Macario Gomez.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2017%202007/DSC03285.jpg
We were starved when we returned to Zulum, our intent had been to stop in one of the small pueblos, but nothing was open when we passed by. I think we were just a little late for lunch and early for dinner! Sergio at Zulum fixed us some wonderful Chicken Qiesadillas for a late lunch. Sorry, forgot picture!!
We had arranged to have massages on the beach at 5:00 today. Ok, now it is confession time. Both myself and my husband were massage virgins and had no idea how we should "dress" for a massage on the beach. All my DH did was laugh at me as I obsessed about it. I had no idea about massage etiquette so by the time I did get my massage it was truly needed!! I wore a two piece swim suit, but I think I would have been much more comfortable with just a bottom and a cover up to get to the beach. I think I would have enjoyed it much more without the interference of the top. This is a subject that I had never seen addressed and when it came to it, I was very nervous!! LOL It is something I will definitely have again that is for sure!!
Here is a picture of where we had our massages - this is not us - another couple the next day -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03433.jpg
We took a nap after our massages, me in the hammock and DH in a chair. We decided when we woke that we really weren't too hungry so decided to search out some dessert. We stopped at Luna Maya for some Apple Crepes and Pineapple Flambe and of course, we had forgot the camera!! It was truly yummy and the ambiance of their "bar" area was awesome. Really, really beautiful!! We stayed for a couple drinks and then left to go home and crash!!

OK, here I am, commenting again even though I'm sure you're out there working on the next post.
I can't wait to get to the monkey preserve. I've never seen monkeys in the wild before (that I know of), and while I guess this isn't strictly "wild", it works for me.
Too funny about the Ruins and the vines. When I'm in my backyard doing battle with wild grape and ivy vines all summer and I start to think they're fighting back, I think of that book often.
As for massages, I do hope you'll keep getting them now that you've had your first! I generally go naked, but I also generally have them in places where there's at least a modicum of privacy (you'll notice other massage huts up and down the beach with either fabric or stick walls for privacy).
I think, in your situation, I still might have just gone commando under a pareo and quickly slipped under the sheets on the bed (assuming they had a sheet). Massage therapists are trained in the skillful maneuvering of sheets and/or towels to protect the important bits while still giving themselves room to work.
So, was it good? Were you comfortable, relaxed? Are you going to become a massage addict like me?

Shoot, I had another question. You said when you get to the circle heading towards Coba, you head north. Is that easy to find? What is the town the sign points to? I know you said the Laguna isn't marked, but surely the exit off the circle has some sort of sign marking?
In your picture, would you head to the right, where the sign says "Circulacion"? Though I guess that just takes you into the circle. I'm guessing you don't go toward Coba, Xcaret or Tulum, so I'm just looking for more specific clues. I'd hate to go 17 km in the wrong direction!
Thanks.

Fran, it is a round a bout - you just go in a circle and there is a road off to the north that you take. I think it says to Punta Laguna....... Lee help me on this - is it marked?? I know I had the map, so I knew it was there but there is only the coba hwy, south to the ruins, and then north to PL.
Oh, and your question about the steak at Buenos Aires - it was excellent!!

You're right, Kayt, you do head north after the circular-returno-type-thing (I think I'm in love...a women who knows directions!:)). BR, as you approach the circle, you'll veer to the right and travel counter-clockwise for just a 1/4 of the circle. I'm not sure if there's signage but that road deadends at the town of Nuevo Xcan (at Highway 180) so if there's a marker it might say Nuevo Xcan or Punta Laguna or Pac Chen or Highway 180 (how's that for narrowing it down?). The bottom line is there's only four roads that connect to that circle (the Coba Road you're on which comes into it at the bottom, the continuation of the Coba Road heading towards Valladolid which is at the top of the circle, the road that goes to the Coba ruins which is to the left and the one you want for Punta Laguna which is to the right). You'll be on this road for about 15 minutes (don't go too fast as there tends to be wildlife and children walking on it) and you'll see the sign to the right (though the parking lot and entrance will be on your left).

Oh, it's the same road that goes to Pac Chen? That helps.
Thanks, I just didn't know if there were more than 4 choices at the circle. It's been a while since I've been out there, and I've only been at that circle 3 times in my life, only twice driving, and that was coming out from Valladolid.

It was a very windy day as I said, too windy to even lay on the beach, so we decided on a long walk.
Walked all the way to the "wood"

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03335.jpg
After our long, lazy, windsurf watching walk, we decided to return to Mayan Grill in the daylight for a snack, as it was dark the last time we were there. I am so glad we did!! Like I said it was a beautiful day out except for the wind and the water color was fabulous!! (except for close to shore)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03338.jpg
The first night that we were there we kept seeing lights out on what we thought was a point coming out from shore - we were pretty close on our guess....... someone was out on this point with a light.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03351.jpg
I was trying to see what that mega rich resort looked like from here - took this picture - I can't believe they pay that kind of money to stay at a resort in Tulum that doesn't even have a beach!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03352.jpg
From the Mayan Grill we traveled into town, as I no longer had sunglasses and I find that I really need them!! We went in that ben franklin type store on the main street close to Don Cafetos and got me a cheap pair for the rest of our stay. I really was afraid of Murphy's Law coming into play on this move as, buy sunglasses, no more sun. Didn't happen, so one up on Murphy today!! We stopped at the San Fran for treats and they really had some great looking green grapes. After I thought that was probably not the best thing to buy with having to rinse them and such, but all turned out well.
It was so hot in town we couldn't stand it, so we returned Zulum and took another walk. On this walk we played, smashed sand walls made by the waves and dawdled almost too long as we were to meet Arobb (Andrea) and her significant other (Matthew) at Tita's at 6pm.
Got a really nice shot of the waves -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03362.jpg
We made it to Tita's with 4 minutes to spare by our watch!! LOL My DH hates to be late for anything!!
We ordered drinks waiting for Andrea and Matthew to show up - I took a picture from our table to the beach -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2018%202007/DSC03376.jpg
This is the same shot from Nov 06
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/DSC01164.jpg
Just seems to be foliage missing.
Andrea and Matthew turned up, talked awhile and had a few drinks. They both liked the Pina Coladas they got in Mexico, so much better than any they ever got at home!! We chatted and then decided we all wanted to try Mezzinine for dinner, so we drove there and A&M had a scooter they drove down there. Mezzinine was closed, no lights whatever. (we had tried earlier, just thought we hit a "closed" day, but they were never open the whole time we were there - bummed!!) So, on to another plan - we had just been to Mayan Beach Grill that day, so that was out and we had talked to A&M about our desert at Luna Maya and so we thought we would give them a try for dinner. This was a mistake for the carnivores. There was nothing except a pasta dish (and this one just veggies) on the menu that wasn't fish or seafood. They did have hamburgers on the lunch menu and they were kind enough to fix one for my DH and I had the pasta dish.......... let me tell you, nothing to write home about, but we were at a "fish, seafood" restaurant I guess.........

Yay! This is so great! You have really wonderful photos, I wish I could use the light as well as you do.
I have insufficient smileys for this--another board has a clapping guy, I like that one. *clap*clap*clap*!

Friday October 19th
I get morose when it gets close to our vacation ending......... I try not to let it bother me, but the first thing on my mind this morning is I only have today and tomorrow left.........
Absolutely beautiful sunrise....... again........ how can I ever tire of these??

Used the zoom on this one!! I really liked the zoom!!

We really had a lot of overcast skys and cloudy sunrises!! I would have loved a full on sun one!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC01553.jpg
I just thought - whew, without the clouds!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC01556.jpg
This was finally at 7:15!! Gonna have some sun!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC01567.jpg
Today was at the beach day!! LOL Like I haven't had one of those yet!! We really did nothing and just walked and read and played in the surf!! I took this picture that I really love on this day - feet in the sand & water..........
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03407.jpg
Watched the bird play in the surf and look for his food - just seems like these birds waste alot of calories dodging the waves!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03431.jpg
We did so much this day we had to take a nap before dinner!! It is amazing how doing nothing wears a person out. When we woke it was just sunset - took this picture off our balcony....
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC01574.jpg
The moon was already out and high in the sky - really cool.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC01572.jpg
We went into town to shop and eat!! Nothing caught my eye shopping but it really smelled yummy at Don Cafetos, so we stopped there for dinner. As usual, thirsty we were.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03436.jpg
Mustn't forget the great appetizer veggies & salsa!! whew......... thought I burned my tongue gone!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03437.jpg
I had the arrachera tacos and my DH (who's name is Fred by the way) had tampequena steak. ( sorry these are kinda foggy)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03438.jpg
I really loved those tacos!! I love meat and I love onion - doesn't get any better than that!!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2019%202007/DSC03439.jpg
After leaving Don's we shopped some more but still nothing new caught my eye. Home to read and to bed.

Oh no, it's coming to an end! I hate it when these end. I'm loving your pictures so much, and that feet in the surf shot is a real classic.

Saturday October 20th
Another beautiful sunrise!! What can I say?? I never tire of them, I hope you don't!!
I used the night setting on this picture - sure shows the blue of the morning light!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01590.jpg
Changed back to my normal setting -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01593.jpg
I guess you can say the sunrise matched my mood, blue, today I leave Tulum & Zulum. We have to pack and leave for Xpu Ha for our last day.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01598.jpg
This crab stayed out late last night - they are usually hiding by the time I hit the beach!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01604.jpg
Some more sunrise.........
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01614.jpg
Got the pelicans out fishing...........
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01616.jpg
Did a zoom on the sun trying to come out & play
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01617.jpg
Seemed to be moving backwards this morning - that matched my mood also!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01623.jpg
Finally - the sun!!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC01635.jpg
We took a shorter walk this morning. After eating breakfast, we finished up our packing.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Oct%2020%202007/DSC03459.jpg
It was very depressing!! Why is it dirty clothes take up much more room than clean ones?? Seems to be a really good reason to get your laundry done down there before you come home!! LOL After the packing was done, we took our normal walk. The sun finally came out and the beach was much calmer than it had been the whole time we were there. Murphy caught up with me - I leave today, so of course, the beach is at its best!! LOL We really seemed to always walk south on the beach, as the weeds were still a problem at the north end of the beach. There did seem to be alot of erosion there also. We visited our favorite beach flotsom, the "wood" and kissed goodbye our Tulum, our Zulum............... Our Nirvana........

What a treat your report has been!! I love your photos and never get tired of them!!! Your kissing picture is fabulous...you should frame that one!!!
Where is the famous piece of wood located?? I think all Tulumanaries should have their picture take with it (like Lee's) and we could all use them for our avatars! :D

Even though it's much more difficult for me to read and understand everything in your trip-report as I am German, I must say it's fabulous, Minnie!!! Your pictures are sooooooo great! I want to go NOW at once!
Hope you'll post some more pictures! ;)
