If we want to snorkel but also want to do other things -- bike ride to local areas but will l not have a vehicle, where would you suggest staying for a couple days. Have thought about Tankha Inn but they have a 3 night minimum at $80 -- higher than I want to go Dec 11-19th. This looks great but is out of my budget.

Are there any secure inexpensive cabanas or resorts in the area for around $50? We camp, fish, bicycle, swim, hike, and are in our mid-50s if that helps.

Akumal is a great area for snorkeling as is Tankah. I just don't know what you can find in the $50 range in high season in either of those areas since both are mainly condos and villas. You can probably rent a cabin tent from Lalo at Oscar y Lalos restaurant for $15-$20 a day.
Considering the biking comment, you can whittle your choice down to Akumal, Tankah is fairly isolated, maybe 5 miles to Tulum.
$80 seems like a great price for high season, Casa Cenote just up the beach from Tankah Inn will be getting about $150.00 a nite. The reef direcly in front of Tankah Inn is one of my favorite snorkeling spots on the coast, lots of stingrays to chase.
Never stayed at Tankah Inn, so I don't know if they have a restaurant or not, Casa Cenote has great food and there is another place next door that serves dinner... but other than that, you have to go into Tulum or Chemuyil for dinner

I have been told and am finding that it will be low season until 12-20. Tankha seems to have the best reviews on the hotel and food. Sounds like it is really remote. We won't have a car.

The cabin tents are on tankha bay also? Would you think this time period would be ok just to walk in for a cabana on Akumal or the cabin tents?
Is there a site you know of to see what these cabin tents are.

I found a The Hotel Que Onda in Akumal for $55. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks for any info.

The Vista Del Mar Hotel on Half Moon Bay has rooms with one queen bed for $50 until Dec. 18, then they go up to $120!! I haven't stayed there yet, but have heard positive reviews. I have booked a couple of nights there at the end of Nov. There is a restaurant next door and another a short walk up the beach. The snorkeling is said to be very good just right off the beach there, too, which is what I'm really looking forward to. I found several websites that could book it and the price quoted was the same on all of them. Try locogringo dot com. That site has LOTS of information and aerial views of the area. Have fun!

Oscar y Lalo's is on Paradise Bay, Soliman Bay is the next bay south, then Tankah Tres where Casa Cenote and Tankah Inn are. No web site for Oscar y Lalos, you just have to show up. The restaurant is the only thing on Paradise Bay and it's quite a bike ride to the nearest store in Tulum

Never stayed at Que Onda, but the food is OK.

I'm betting Vista del Mar on Halfmoon Bay is the way to go, sounds like it's in your budget and at least there are some stores and restaurants nearby

I thought I had read that the snorkeling in Half Moon Bay was not too good. I was contacted by Casa Tropical with a place on Yal-Ku lagoon. Has any one heard of that location?

??? The south end of Halfmoon Bay is kinda lame, but the center and north side are usuually excellent. Yal-ku is on the north side of Halfmoon Bay and it is another great spot if you get there early before the crowds. If the place your staying at has access to the lagoon, you won't have to pay an entry fee... I think thats up to $60 pesos now. You can probably see a few turtles near the big rock at the mouth of Yal-ku and near the north end of the reef at Halfmoon Bay
