Day 4 - May 22, 2007 - Back to Tulum
As usual I awoke just before 6:00 for the sunrise. Chris was awake as well, and we decided to head on down to the beach to watch the sun. We then walked the length of beach down past the Akumal Beach Resort, until the sand got more rough than the rest of the beach. Ahh, we missed the flour-soft sand of Tulum under our feet. We decided to head over to the Cyber café to post a message about Susy's cooler going AWOL. We got there a little early, so walked around a bit until the clock struck 8:00. Dang, I wish I would have grabbed my sandals before we headed out. Things were a little touchy on the ol' piggies.
Finally we got in, and I posted my note. As we were leaving, Susy and Tim were coming into the Cyber café. I showed her the post, and then we all decided to head over for some breakfast at the Turtle Bay bakery. This is another "must eat at" place in Akumal. For some reason the coffee was going down quite fast this morning.

Tim and I each ordered the French toast this morning. It came topped with bananas and looked just like this:

I can't exactly recall what it was that Chris ordered, although it did look just like this:

That's the best picture I can take in dim lighting with a camera with a busted flash synchro-gizmo. I know she liked it, so let's just call it . . . "egg thingie".
After breakfast we went back to Susy and Tim's room, packed up our stuff and said our goodbyes. We then headed back south to our Tulum retreat, stopping off at the San Francisco de Asisi supermarket in Tulum to pick up a couple of 5 liter jugs of water. Tita Tulum provides a carafe of water in your room each day, but Chris and I are big water drinkers and that carafe is usually empty by about 10;00 am. These two jugs will be used to refill water bottles for the beach, for trips to the ruins, and basically for the reason that you can just never have too much purified water with you in Mexico.
After dropping our stuff off back in cabana #5, we set up shop for the day under our little palapa. We both caught up on some journaling, and then proceeded to read, sun, swim, and just basically relax. Today was a designated an official "vegetate day".

We decided to minimize activity today by having lunch at Tita's. This was more like one of our "snack" type lunches, as it was early afternoon. Chris was quite happy to get her "Sprite in a bottle". This is always a highlight of the trip for her.

We had to put Tita in the running for our annual Guac contest, and here was her entry:

I'm sure we had something else for lunch too, but I can't recall right now exactly what that was. The afternoon was more relaxing, sunning, and reading. It doesn't make for interesting reading in a Trip Report, but it was exactly what the Dr. ordered.
After showering we headed into Tulum Pueblo for dinner. We wanted to go back to il Basilico, a quaint Italian place we ate at last year. This was the place last year that we thought wasn't open because it was always empty, then we found out they had seating upstairs and we had a fantastic meal with a nice open air breeze. So we got lucky and parked close by, and walked inside to head upstairs. We were stopped by a couple young folks who told us that the upstairs was closed but we could sit downstairs. The downstairs consists of booths with wooden benches. Probably not too bad, had we not known how nice things were upstairs. So since I had a "bad vibe" about the folks telling us to have a seat, my brain was telling me "F-off and go somewhere else". My brain has a mean streak sometimes. Anyhow, we politely told them we were going to go elsewhere, and proceeded down the road.
Eventually we wound up across the street over at La Nave. It was hot here too, but we grabbed a seat near a big fan to maintain a "minimal sweat level". After careful consideration of the menu, I looked up and decided to order whatever the gal at the next table over was getting. Man! It looked good. No, I didn't ask her what she ordered, I just found something that looked close on the menu. So I ordered the Pesto Fettucine. Chris went with the spiral pasta primavera. Considering the atmosphere was a might sketchy, the food was quite tasty. I'm glad neither of us went with the pizza here, as the table where they made the pizza sat directly under the bug zapper. Yuck!
After driving back "home" to Tita's, we grabbed our little red-filtered led flashlights and decided to walk the beach in the dark. It was quite fun surprising (terrorizing) the little crabs during our walk. The goal was to see how easy it would be to walk up to Posada Margherita later in the week and walk back in the dark. After about 10 minutes of this we decided we would drive to Posada M later in the week. We also decided to turn around and head back to Tita's and go to sleep. Tomorrow we were going to Coba.
